Yes, they were used. Might have been part of the HD cooling package or for A/C equipped cars. I would think all GS350's got them. I might be wrong.

My high compression 350 doesn’t on the ‘70 Skylark withoutA/C.

They should help move more air and help with cooling correct?

Yes , they have more fan blades on the clutch fan.

I don't believe non-A/C, non-H/D cooling 350 cars got a fan clutch unfortunately. I saw something not long ago (maybe on here) about the HP to turn a solid fan vs. a fan clutch and it was significant.

I seem to recall that standard, base 350's had a solid, 4 blade steel "X" fan. I know 300's and 340's did. Good news is it's an cheap, easy HP adding bolt on improvement on any car. It's the first thing I do to a car I buy if it doesnt have one.

Are all the clutch units the same or do they differ between the big and small block?

Paul, here's an exercise for you.:D Go over to www.rockauto.com Then look up 70-72 GS, Skylark, 350 and 455 engines. Look under cooling system, then Radiator Fan Clutch. That will answer your question.:)

    LOL, sarcasm back atacha!

Seriously, there are 10 options there and as many or more on EBay. What is the BEST OPTION?

The best clutches are the thermal ones, just pick one.

My 71 GS has only the solid 4 blade "X" fan, can i use a thermal clutch with this fan ?
And if so, better a heavy duty clutch ? Hayden, GMB or Four Seasons ?

I have searched for information to understand the clutches, found this:

Is it safe to assume you have a cooling problem ? I’m sure there’s an explanation vs trying to update a system that should be efficient enough to cool for your car. .

No cooling problem here, but would it be an improvement ? I have seen the stated below also.

From a HP perspective it'd be an improvement and probably better cooling too.

The purpose of a fan clutch is to increase fan action when it is needed, and to decrease fan action when it is not. It frees up engine power and cools more effectively. What else do you need to know?

I was not sure if the 4 blade fan can be used with a clutch and if i should prefer a manufacturer.
