Well, obviously. I just meant not to put all 265lbs of my weight on the wrench

Eric do yourself a favor and buy a good pump from NAPA.

    Hi Skyphix,

You can use a rebuilt one. I think you would have a pretty hard time finding a brand new water pump any way. Most are rebuilt. Just make sure you get it from a auto parts store that sells good parts.... Napa, Car Quest, etc. I bought a cheap one for about 20 bucks one time that went bad very quickly. If I recall correctly I returned it for another one that also went bad way too early...... a matter of a few weeks or months, I don't remember. I ended up getting a third from Car Quest. The guy at the parts counter said that my first two from the "other" store were probably rebuilt by what he called, "a dust and clean shop."

Advance Auto (formerly Parts America around here) is where I have gone for my parts in the past (alternator, distributor)... and only thing bad I got there was a voltage regulator. They supposedly have new water pumps (Made by Holley and GMB... whoever GMB is). I will go to Napa today, if I get time.

Is the one I had planned on going to get (today)... good thing I heard from you, I'll wait a bit to see what you have to say... as long as I get it done before Thursday.

I will probably be getting a "new" one because they come with lifetime warranty (some of them) and the ones marked rebuilt are a 1 year warranty... price difference is negligable (less then 10 dollars)... though the water pump doesn't really look like the one in the car I'm sure the picture they show is just a generic one :puzzled:

I could always go to the local speed shop, I'm sure he'd have something. Is there any specific brand of rebuilt/new pumps I should get? I'd think if X brand was sold at Napa or "Jim's car parts" it'd be quality no matter where I bought it.

    Thanks for the tips

That looks like the correct water pump to me....... maybe it's the angle of the pic.

Actually one of the local speed/race shops is where I got my 2 crappy water pumps. He's kind of known for being a llittle on the shady side, I've heard since then.

I have to go over to the parts store tonight and get some sort of starter-style button for my horn ( yes, I was in too much of a rush to hook it up when I put on my new steering wheel :Dou: and I can't seem to twist, pull, yank, turn or melt the center cap out so I am just gonna run a little button ) so I will probably order/pickup that water pump tonight. Thanks for all the tips and advice... I will post an update when I'm done

    Eric,
If you don't have a torque wrench, just install the water pump bolts with a 1/4" drive socket wrench, get them nice and snug and you should'nt have any problems. I've never stripped one yet. An old very wise mechanic taught me this trick 40 years ago and I'll never forget it:Smarty:

I wish I had read all these threads before I started on my water pump (the last one I did was on a SBC back in '94 so it's been a while). I was just so happy to have something to wrench on again...now I'm in the process of getting one of the little bolts out. Oddly enough, I was using a 1/4 ratchet, lower left bolt just snapped in two with hardly any torque. The EZ-out I got right now is just chewing out the inside of the stud. I thought I heard it break but it's still not budging. I'm going to get some PB Blaster and hope that it works. WD-40 isn't doing the trick. I'm still hoping I don't have to pull the whole timing cover. Eric, good luck. I hope yours goes smoothly.

    bolts

Larry - Eric was done a year ago.....! If there is some of the bolts still sticking out you can soak it overnight, put some gentle heat (propane torch) on the housing, and work it back and forth with vise grips. Other wise, you are best to drill it out and use a heli-coil.

    waterpump - rad

buy a new waterpump & maybe even buy an extra gasket , just in case . while u have the fan assembly & shroud & waterpump assemblies removed , go the extra step & remove the rad and thoroughly flush it top to bottom & bottom to top . also flush the block ports at the same time . u would be surprised what kind of crap will be flushed out . use a 50/50 solution of regular anti freeze , not the long lasting stuff (maxcool) .
also agree with new belts & hoses .
i have used a 3/8" torque wrench to totrque the bolts but a 1/4"
drive socket set works just as well . keeps u from overtightening the bolts . also put a little bit of anti-seize on the bolts .
    good luck.

Sorry to bring back an old topic , but my water pump start to make noise (tic tic tic ) today , As I read the new one's are not expensive ? My mechanic told me they are hard to find so in those case they have to rebuilt mine ... Is it dangerous to run the car with those "tic tic tic " just the time they find a pump ? Or I better keep the car in the driveway for some days ?

    waterpump revisted

i would park the car to save the engine . i have never heard a waterpump tick , but have heard them squeal a little before the bearing let go & puked antifreeze all over the ground . since u are in que , u can probably buy a new waterpump from carquest or a rebuilt from cdn tire . DO NOT recommend rebuilt ! worse case u can order from the u.s. & have mailed to u . i bought a new one made by airtex for my gs , last year , from theautopartsstore.com , with no problems .

I'm gonna play it safe . I took an apointment on monday morning . My mechanic told me the pump wasn't avaiable anywhere so it has to be "rebuilt" .....

Does someone has a part number to check at the Canadian Tire , Napa store or else if I could be able to have it by myself and bring it to the garage ?

Always replace the little 1/4" bolts (7/16" head) when you replace the water pump. The ones that come on it from the factory are not grade 5, so always get some good grade 5 bolts to replace them with (you can buy them at any hardware store or auto parts store). Grade 5 will have 3 marks on the head. If you do this, you won't have to worry about them breaking off in the timing cover next time you have to change the pump.

    Re: waterpump revisted

I stop to the garage at 5h to take some fresh news of my car , how it's going .... The tick is not coming from the water Pump but from the pulley (alternator to waterpump) just behind the radiator fan .

The thing is where am I gonna find one of those If we cannot find one nearby ?
part # 1359065 single pulley (non a/c) and what would be the aprox. price ?
