If a vehicle is making a ticking sound, a friend of mine says add some transmission fluid to the oil? He claims it will clean? Well then?

    Thanks

Yes tranny fluid has heavy detergents that can help clean.
Some use it right before an oil change; some run a quart of it all the time.

MMO is also a good one for that. Marvelous Mystery Oil.

In the Subaru world they use Seafoam to cure the tick of death.

    Matt,
Yep that's what my friend in Manteca told me to do first:

He said add 1/2 quart to My GS.
    Just started the Noise...Crap.

Want it ready for the Nationals in Bowling Green.
Waited years for this thing, since I was out west, and it was too far..

Do you suggest Mystery oil or Tranny fluid?
    What PERCENTAGE?
    5 QUARTS TOTAL ?

    Thanks,
    Scott

Oh no, what I would do is never the best.

    Ask anyone ;)

Does it leak oil, or stay full all the time.

Mine would probably be low already so Id dump in a whole quart of tranny fluid and drive till it went away. If not in a short time Id change the oil with fresh and try again but use a heavy detergent oil like Rotella with a quart of tranny fluid. Rotella only comes in 4 quart jugs n e ways.

As is a quart of tranny fluid is cheaper then a bottle of MMO but in the same it comes in a quart bottle too but only use half a quart of MMO in the oil, other half you dump in the gas tank/full.

I do that ever so often to both my cars.
All the old guys swear by it, never had an adverse effect.

Change the oil and filter,,,, sub one qt of atf for 1 qt. oil in the change..... then if the lifter dont get quiet,,, replace it......

If the engine is ticking or tapping, check the valve train first. See if you can isolate the noise to one valve. Check the rocker arms and push rods for signs of wear. Noise isn't always a stuck lifter, it's usually something else. If you change your oil on a regular basis, lifter problems are rare.

I've heard this from either the turbo 6 guys or the cavi guys
use 1-2 ounces of 80w-90 gear lube in with the motor oil for that noisy lifter.

    Got the Mystery oil,
What if the oil is synthetic, does it matter? 10W30
Hope it's not more than adding some magic fluid.
    Thanks

It is some magic fluid, smells nice too.

I wouldn't ask about syn oil as some like it, some don't.

I don't, I run regular dino with ZDDP changed more often.

    I second what Larry said.
I tried everything to un-stick my stuck lifter and nothing worked. Turned out to be a flat cam lobe.

    No luck....with additive.

Yep, Time to pull the Valve cover.
    Maybe the intake, later.
    See what's going on.
Appears to be on the drivers side.

Hey Drew, had a house near Blossom Hill Rd and Blossom. Choctaw Drive to be exact. Miss it.

Can't find em, use to be a few threads that hinted that the #7 driver side is often the culpert of a drivers side tick on a 350.

See if the push rods still spins on #7, if not it could be the cam.
Or maybe just worn rocker n shaft.

I have to admit it magically got quiet now, after adding Mystery Oil.
However I can still hear it.
When I get time I'll pull the valve cover off and look more closely.
And, Roger copy the number seven....

    ENGINE NOISE

    Thanks
    Scott

Well you didn't give it enough time to do anything when you first said it didn't work. Now that you notice a change give it some more time.

Its not gonna be pure magic and be fixed in 20 mins, if it is gunk in the lifter, it will need to break it down.

How long did it tick before doing all this?

-------- Rislone = a quart of diesel fuel.

yes it does work too, but is only used for a few mins right before n oil change. Where MMO can go in the oil and stay there to do its job.

Hey, I can't thank-you guys enough, No lie,
You were right! It only did it two times before this.
Now I can make the Bowlinggreen Nationals!
    Hopefully!

The noise Tick, Tick, Tick, [LOL] has gone away with :
    1 QT Magic/ Mystery Oil and 4 Qt's 10W30 synthetic.

Man, I hope it lasts now. Do I have to do this at every oil change now?

    Thanks!
