I'll agree with you, having had a 4 speed R2 '63 Super Hawk for 14 years.Funny thing though, and mine was well tuned with some internal supercharger mods,R3 cast iron headers, etc., I'd be lucky to get much below 15 seconds in the 1/4.Look at the times they are turning now.Even the Pure Stock R1 times are faster than what days-of-yore stock R2 times were.Obviously there is latent creative engineering going on beyond the wildest dreams of Sherwood Egbert, Vince Granatelli et al!!

71 GS Stage-1. Low Compression be damned. Also 1971 442 w-30. Also quick low compression. And sticking with the low comp. theme how about 71 HO 455 trans Am. Very quick as are the t-37 with HO 455.... Jim I have my doubts on those Studebakers. Something really wrong has been done to those cars. I cannot fathom those cars running like they do when they were new.

Right, the SS Impala was dropped in 70 and the 2 door post Biscayne and Bel Air were dropped as well (they were left with the 4 door model). However, the Impala could be had with the 454 and if I'm not mistaken you could order the same engine for any of the full size lineup (but don't quote me on that). A 4 door Biscayne equipped with a 454 would certainly be rare and although not impossible, I couldn't see anyone ordering it that way.

How about the 73-74 Pontiac Grand Ams with the 455? And the '73 GTO.These could be had with a 4 speed from the factory.

There is a whole lot more preparation going on today then there was 30, 40, or even 50 years ago. I have a soft spot for the '62 300H as I owned one and drove it through a timed flying mile at 142 - the fastest I have ever been in a car. HOT ROD magazine ran one in the 1962 nationals. The preparation was minimal - obvious stuff like backing off the drum brake adjustment, a zero toe-in alignment, backing off the alternator belt (yes, Chrysler had alternators in 1962), Headers I think, but not much else. They turned top time, but were beaten in the finals by a 421 Pontiac with a slower et then the big Mopar's best. I think the Chrysler lit em up big time in the run for SS top eliminator. Somewhere, there is a pretty good article in (obviously) HOT ROD about it.

When most people think of Mercury they only think of the Cougar. But really, Mercury is to FoMoCo that Buick is to GM-way too underrated. The 66-67 Comets with the 390, the 68-72 Comet/Montego/Cyclones with the 390's & 428 CJ & 429 SCJ were all beasts. But then you also had the Marauder and the Cougar too with the 429. Damn, why don't I have room in my garage to add a couple of these?

I love the 70 Cyclone Spoiler. I saw a gold one in Portland Maine over the summer. It was beautiful. Gave him a big thumbs up. I can't imagine it is easy to get that nose to all line up with all those friggin angles.

Vega's had a 140 Cubic Inch aluminum inline 4cyl, the Monza was available with a 262 and a 305 V8 and manual transmission

The Pontiac Can Am was a 1977 model, I really liked this car when they came out.

@ smokenm.. you really think any 60's model stingray was underrated? even the 327 powered vettes were pretty nasty, the 427s were down right beasts, and vettes are the flagship of GM, everyone expects them to be the king dingaling of performance, especially starting in '63. 65 was the first year of the big block from the factory (but id rather get the fuel injected 327!).

Vettes didnt really lose their status as top of the line GM performance til the 80s when the GNs kicked their butts, and they didnt get it back until the firehawks were axed (course the vette would eat the GN, Syclone, and Firehawk in the twisties, but who cares about twisties?)

No. I don't think it was underated and maybe doesn't fit this post. Just wanted to show you what sits around wasted in some yards. Probably should have posted it in Junkyard Jewels.
