So I sold my beloved GS after owning it for 13 years. It had gone from a 350 to a built 455, done the body the way I liked it , interior back up to snuff , th400 rebuilt by a local guru. Pretty much my dream car, so why'd I sell?
I could'nt think of anything else to do to the car that stirred the soul, and being the fourth hardtop Buick A body I've had over the years I felt I needed a vert or SunCoupe. SO off it went to Evilbay (there is a good reason they call it that) didnt make the reserve the first time, lowered the reserve the second time well below what I felt it was worth hoping to spur more bidding, and it backfired on me.
The winning bidder (local guy) show's up , kicks the tire's,slams the doors and tells me it's not what they ( him and the wife) were looking for :af:
Next day, I put it up here for that winning bid price and BOOM the thing sold in a day. Here's where it get's bad. The new owner calls me up the next day, says the rear end is toast:shock:
I'm like , no Fn way dude, please tell me you got a racoon stuck up in the rear wheel well or something, but no, he pulls the inspection plug and there is little or no fluid in the pumpkin:Dou:
I had no clue, there was no leaks from it and it wasnt making any clunking sounds for me or Beth when we drove it, then he say's he was wondering why I did'nt have any plates on the car, like maybe they werent on there becouse I knew the rear was bad:spank:
I pulled the plates off as soon as the ebay listing made the low low reserve figuring , thats it , she's sold.,
I feel real bad about it and dont know if I should offer to help fix/pay for fixing the rear. What I am most worried about is my rep in the Buick community. I feel I let her go to another long time Buick guy for a real fair price and dont want to get slammed over the appearence of lemon tossing.
Sorry ,I am rambling, I just feel bad couse I guess there was one more thing I could have built up on the car and thats the thing that bit the new owner in the ass the first day he had it.:ball:

    Thanks for listening

Hey, Dana - Anyone that knows you at ALL knows what a stand-up guy you are. Sh*t happens, and unfortunately did here, but I wouldn't expect you to pay for the repair if I had bought the car from you. That's just part of the gig with cars. It's a bummer for sure, but hopefully cooler heads will prevail......

No need to worry about your rep as far as I (and a LOT of other people) am concerned.

    Take care.

  3. If the car was sold as-is, it's their problem. As harsh as that sounds, would you be responsable if the new owner wrecked it? No, because it is now his car. His car doesn't have any fluid in the rear end.

You two are the sludge on the bottom of the coffee pot after you forget to turn the burner off and it ferments all day.......

.....but thats what I thought before the car sale :moonu:  :moonu:

Seriously - these are old cars and things break !! You weren't representing the POSI as "recently Rebuilt" or "Bullet-Proof".

The RoadMaster Wagon I bought for my wife was represented as having a "Brand New Rebuilt Transmission" thats going into the shop next week to get fixed. There's 11 other things wrong with the car too that weren't disclosed.....until I had the car shipped 2500 miles and went through it

Depending on where the owner is, how much it was driven by him, and all that I would consider paying for half the parts, helping fix it, or if he basically got it and the rear was toast, giving his money back. What does he want/expect from you?

If he drove it for a week and the same thing happenend, I'd say sorry but you had plenty of time to check things out.

Dana, thats "the way the cookie crumbles" :(

I sold my green 67 to a member on the board here. I'd driven it for years and NEVER had a problem or been stranded with it.
He called me from a town 30 minutes away as he was driving it home and said he was stranded at a gas station because it wouldn't start after he stopped for gas.
I felt just like you do right now!!
I KNOW there was never a problem, and I was worried he's thinking a tried to screw him.
Turns out that it was just a loose connection on the battery cable. Clean it up, tighten it, and off he went again. He hasn't had a problem since.

But still... it sure sucks when it goes that way.
    Murphy's law I guess.

    I agree with Adam.

  8. I also agree with Adam's thoughts on this, especially considering it was sold to a long-time Buick guy/board member. If I could swing it financially, I would offer to help with repairs, if it were me. If it had sold on ebay and shipped and was a done deal, I might not feel the same, hard to say for sure. Old used cars are sold as-is.

I've always felt like this, if you go and look at a car and its used, even more if its used and OLD!.. then your at the mercy of YOURSELF!! Your the one looking at it and checking it out and writing the check, now if I'm told the rear end is perfect, just had it serviced yesterday, da, da, da, da, da, then it blows all to hell the next day then yeah, thats wrong but...anyone that has messed with old used cars knows that they can fall on there face at any given time for no reason at all, I mean how many times has your car died and the first thing out of your mouth is, but its been running perfect!...lol. Really I think most of us know when you buy an old car like that stuff is gonna happen and it can happen the day you buy it and thats just the way it goes. I bought my 66 Skylark from a guy on here and all I knew before hand was what he said and some pics, I paid the price, had it shipped to a drop 70 miles from my home, picked the car up and drove it that 70 miles and if it had died on the way home I'd said, call a tow truck and thats it.

I gotta say that as a buyer, I would be awfully suspicious.

In many states, the buyer can make you fix any problems found in 30 days that were not disclosed. I think that varies in duration and remedy, and you can probably write the proper language in the bill of sale to avoid it. But if you weren't careful, you might be liable.

If you have the means, you should help him. Maybe just buy the car back. If you are totally strapped, then it's up to your conscience how to handle it. But, I would definately try to help the guy out. I like the idea of paying for 1/2 of the parts or something. Up to you.

Well, I thought this would end up on here. I sent my cousin to Dana, and my cousin bought the car. We both have been doing cars for a long time. Things happen, but it does stink when it is on the ride home after the purchase a few hours earlier. Dana has done a awesome job on the car. The craftsmanship and time he spent is what you would expect from a true car guy. Its just timing and circumstances do stink some time. I wouldn't worry about the legal crap, and none of us are going to be jerks about it. Things happen, and we will get it apart, and see what's wrong. Dana, what you do is completely up to you. I don't think my cousin is looking for anything, and lets face it, rear ends are not the most expensive item that could have broke. Its just a bad thing to deal with. You don't need to feel bad or defend your self, its just everyday stuff. I like to think people are basically good, and do what they beleive to be right. I appreciate your help Dana, and Ernie does really like the car. Besides, I may end up with some free pizza and beer out of this deal :). Tony

    See, that's the thing.

It would be a different story if it were just an "OK" car, but we all, I think, know how nice this car is. It's not like it was a rustbucket held together with bailing wire and oh, yeah, by the way, the rear end's dry. It's a nice car, and Murphy's Law took care of the rest. It will get taken care of, and everyone will be satisfied, I'm sure.

Thats the answer. Tony and his cousin obviously are are not new to buying cars, and lets face it these cars are old. You can restore one ground up and something go wrong. I would just say thumbs up to you for caring what happend :TU: and also to Tony and his cousin for being reasonable :TU:

Sounds like some folks ought to get together and get it fixed together and new friends will be the outcome. :)

Don't worry Dana, you honestly didnt know. How could you have prevented something without knowing it was going to happen first. You shouldn't beat yourself up over this. Your reputation won't be ruined either, because so many people here know you and you have dealt with them nicely.

And plus this wasnt some "ok" car that hasnt been taken care of, this is am Awesome KickA** car that was taken care of. Good Luck finding a vert.

Hey Guys, thanks for the support.
I guess the thing that most bother's me is that I know that car like the back of my hand and I feel like I should have been aware of any possible problems.
Ernie (the new owner) seemed so completely stoked about the car , its just ashame it let him down the first day. I know how I would feel.
We talked last night and I asked him to let me know what happens with the rear end.
I'm sure it'l all workout. I kinda feel the same way David & Yardley do, and want to help out in some way.

    Thanks again dudes
