I am so irritated by these ricers too. Ive actually talked to alot of them though (im in high school, the most common place of ricers). And when I ask them why they dont by muscle, some say because they cant afford them. Some actually like muscle cars, but say they cant pay for it. It is true they are alot more expensive (to be in highschool and have a car like that makes your insurance almost impossibly high). But I still do it, because I love older cars and I hope I never see the day I have to drive even anything foreign, Just dont really like any of it. Fortunetely there are about 4 other kids in my highschool who feel the same way, they drive a 79 firebird with caddy 462, an 88 formula 1 firebird, a 73 centurian and a 89 caprice. But besides that things are just dominated by mass rice (mostly civics). Its horrible, atleast I always get asked the question "why dont the cops pull you over for a loud exhaust" and thats obviously because mine actaully sounds good. Heres another thing people at my school dont believe, that my exhaust sounds so good but its stock. It doesnt matter how many times I try to convince them it is, they always reply "aw no way u got headers and flowmaster under there". Unfortuntely its a growing breed, but theres still a couple good kids left.

Joe, I admire young guys like you. You aren't afraid to go against the "norm" and be different. It's too easy to just get a chevy crapalier and fit in with the ricers. I remember my high school days, '73-'77. I went to a private school, some of the guys took auto shop in boces (they were bussed to another school for that).

Most of them drove chevies, mopars and fords. I took a lot of hell driving a '66 buick riv. They thought I didn't know what I was doing when I rebuilt that 425 nailhead when I was only 17. I guess I was born with a socket wrench in my hand.

I'll never forget the last day of high school for me, class day. This joker whose name was Mike had a '73 plymouth road runner with a 360 that his daddy bought for him. A real dog. Well he thought he had the fastest car at the place, I listened to him brag for 3 years how "Don Prudhomme speaks for himself" He just ported the heads and thought he had a race car.

At first I was a little chicken, but my freind said "c'mon, Joe, you got a big Buick, you'll blow his a$$ off!"

Well, on the last day of school I shut him up but good. With about half the senoir class watching, we drag raced down a street about a mile long. I had him off the line but good, and he never caught up with me. In fact, I parked at the end of the street and had my motor shut off and waited there about a half minute or so for him to catch up.

I could have lost my license that day, we were on a residential street and I think I hit 110.

Yeah,I know what you mean. It's amazing, owning a Buick(or Buicks),puts you in a league all your own. For years,I've owned Buicks, and the reputation I've gotten (from owning just Buicks) from kids is of respect and reverence. I remember pulling into a drive-in I frequent(with my Grand National),and right when I walked in the door, I hear,"Hey Carl,my friend wants to know where he can find a car like yours". Now mind you, this kid was a ricer and I was amazed that he would ask such a question. I figured that this kid was into rice and sushi cars.
He then says to the guys he works with"Those cars are so awesome,I wish I could afford one of those cars;especially like the one Carl has".Those words made me feel so good, and made me all the more proud of carrying the Buick banner.

I still have that same pride.:TU:

Thanks for the support Joe! All the guys at my high school critisize me for having an american car period! Most people like it but they just dont understand why I have it. I love the kill story, Id love to have the chance against some of these ricers, unfortunetely my high school is right on main street, which is heavily patrolled. But for me I just cant even picture myself in one of their cars, I just love the sounds and looks of my buick, u just cant beat it! Nothing is truly like a buick.

Sharp car! Looks a lot better than any ricer I've seen.

Keep the faith, those guys who criticize you are either jealous 'cuz you got a real car, or too stupid to know the difference. My Buick is the best car I've ever owned.

Save your money, if you don't want to keep it stock and only want performance, it'll take some mods but go with the 455, it has the most torque. A dual quad 425 might be easier to make fit in your '66 however. That'll work almost as good.

Don't let my kill story go to your head, OK? I was just lucky.

Thanks for the compliment, I really like the way the ol buick looks too. Well the thing is I dont want to go full blown performance, just want some more performance from it. Really love the 340 engine, I dont think Id go to much further in mods then I am now (headers/exhaust, 4 barrel switch and a cam). The low milage is what I love about this car (33,000). Ha I wont let it go to my head, but Ive beaten my share of ricers too, even in my caprice!

Hey Joe you can keep from havingto write your name and cars every time you post a comment by going up to the top of the page here and clicking on "user cp"....there you can make your own personal "signature"....

Mine is automatically posted with my comments at the bottom of every one of my posts. You can also have the option to insert your signature when you want to and when you don't.

No Ive never even thought about this before, Im not experiance in gearing at all. But I would love to find out more, and find out how hard and costly doing something like that is. Do you have any tips on that?
    Thanks for your advice,
    Joe
