Started to turn over and then it just died?

Was starting the 70 GS 350 up for the first time in months, long story. Anyway, jumped in, turned the key, began to crank then nothing. Turned the key off and back on and still nothing. Tried again in nuetral still nothing. When I say nothing some idiot lights come on when I turn the key, I think it's the gen light, but there is no solenoid or starter noise. I've got 13.7 volts at the battery, cleaned both + and - terminals at the battery but still nothing. Ground back at the block was disassembled and cleaned too.

    Where do I start?

    Thanks
    Matt

Id start by having a part store test the battery and see what how many cranking amps it has. Good luck:TU:

The battery is less than a year old and it's a 5 year battery. I would think that even a low current battery would at least fire the started solenoid. I get nothing?

If I not other luck I'll have it checked.

    Fuseable link at the starter.

    Briz ,

What does the fuseable link look like? I guess I need to find a schematic diagrahm on line to help me along.

Looks like a wire with a fat part in the middle. LOL really, You'll know when you see it. Theres 2 fused wires coming off the starter. when mine went it burned in 2. just driving down the road and the car stalled. I had lights and all but no stater or ignition.

    Matt,
You did everything except check the connections at the starter. That's what you need to do.

Guy's thanks for the information. I was afraid I'd have to crawl under the car. I had two surgeries in the last 3 month with the last one only 3 weeks ago. I had my Colon removed and I can't move too well and I'm under strict doctors orders with limited physical activity. I shouldn't even been crawling around under the hood. I'm just hoping to get a cruise or two in before summer ends. When I feel a little better and can guide my son to get the car on jack stands and trouble shoot this for me I'll keep moving forward. Right now, even if he does all the work, it will be a couple more weeks before I could even crawl under the car and get back out without killing myself.

So again, thanks for the help. I'll pick this back up in a couple weeks.

Your starter is probably bound up. Have someone give the starter a whack with a hammer while someone else holds the key in the start position. I betcha it'll start right up.

Get yourself well and take it easy. Im sure the bad starter will be there waiting for you when your feeling better.

find the purple wire on the starter solonoid and with a voltage meter set at dcv20 range you should have 12 volts when you are cranking. you fat red wire from the battery to the starter solonoid should have 12v all the time on the starter. if both of those are ohk then replace the starter or have your son pull apart your starter solonoid and clean it up. if it isnt clicking make sure you have your power where it should be. if your having issues send me a pm and i can walk you throu it. i am a automotive electrical teacher and have access to alot of those old diagrams.

Finally able to crawl under the car to check things out. Had my boys help me out. Looks like it's the started. Everything checks out to the starter and the solenoid does fire but the starter won't spin just hums a little. No, I don't know the song it's humming:)

Now I just need to get back to work and make some money to buy a starter:rolleyes:

Thanks for the help and best wishes!

You should be able to get a rebuilt from any of the parts stores for under $50. I'd offer to ship you a used one but shipping it would prolly cost most of that

I'm going to get one of the mini, high torque starters from "65SPECIALCONVER" on this board. Figured with the added heat from headers and tight fit this will be a better way to go.

Finally had time to dig into this issue further but not happy with what I found!
Wiring checks out and connectors were cleaned, starter checks out, and grounds all cleaned and good.

Motor is locked up:blast: Tried turning it at the fly wheel and from the front crank. The thing will not turn.

Time to save some :dollar: for a new motor.

    Thanks for all the help!

After missing 6 months of work this year I'm broke. I'll have to wait until next year some time to come up with enough money to start working on this again. Winter came early for me:mad:
