I took the GS to basketball again tonight. It was a great evening to take it out for a drive. After we were done, a few of us were walking out together. 1 of the guys asked who owned the old car. I said it was mine. He said, " That's a Skylark, right?". I almost fell over :eek2: I couldn't believe it, someone got it right :eek2: I mean, it's actually a GS400, but that's close enough for me. I don't have any of the badges on it anyway because I'm still doing body work on it anyway. I was just floored that he got it right. It turns out that a friend of his had a Skylark back when he was in school. I thought that was pretty cool :Brow:

    Cool....it's a rare moment, that's for sure!

I had a guy ask me if my car had the big block 455 in it a couple weeks ago...I was pleasantly surprised to hear that!!! He was a GM employee for a long time, it turns out.

 In 3 years, I haven't had a single person call my car anything but a GS. We must be smarter than your average bear up here.

Most common comments that I hear are:

    Nice Chevelle.
    That thing got 4-bolt mains?
Is that got that "Rocket" motor?
    Is that a 4-4-2?
That thing got a Hemi?
Can you hear me now?

    69conv Thats a BUICK!?

yea, people usually cant seem to get it right for my buick either. just last week i was out somewhere with the 69 and a guy came runing out because he thought it was a cutlass. then he was telling me about how his dad used to have a cutlass. then he goes "but my dads had a 455 in it" and i look at him and tell him my car has a 455 in it too. i have 350 emblems on my GS hood so i guess that wasnt fair. it was funny to see his reaction though.

The best I heard was from my brother. A guy said to him, "HEY.....my dad had a 78 Caddie that looked just like that!" My brother looked at him and said, "OK?"

I will give total credit to a guy 4 months ago........He said, "hey, That's an old Buick." I smiled. :)

It's bad with the Riv too.

That got a "Rocket in it"?
    Nice Pontiac!
A 455? They put a Chevy motor in it?

One thing I have noticed is that old (And I mean 80+) Seem to be able to nail it right off the bat, I've had more than One little old lady in parking lots say "Hey Nice Riv,"

    Again

I must hang out with some pretty smart people :Brow: I took the GS to basketball again last nite, and someone got it right again :eek2: When we were walking out, he asked me if the Skylark was mine. He then told me he was restoring a 72 GTO. I couldn't believe it, 2 people got it right. :bglasses:

My answer to that one is "Yes, its 3/4 race, 1/4 stock"

The usually question I get is ...Hey, that sounds healthy, how big is that cam? My answer is (with my hands about 20 inches apart) "Its about that big".

I think the most common for us has to be...Nice Chevelle! Next time you hear that start looking around and say "Where???"

The old Rivs are popular with the silver haired set.

MY all time worse was a kick in the shorts...

I was COming home from school through the city of buffalo. I notice up ahead 2-3 cars is a convertible A-body. upon further inspection it was a 71 Skylark Convert. So I made a few moves through traffic to catch him. it was a beautiful day, probably around 70 or so. His top was down, my windows were open. Anyway, catch a light and were both stopped at the front. I Notion over to him and say, "Nice Buick" he says back, thats nice too, whats that a Chevelle? :Dou: :Dou: :Dou: :Dou: He had the exact same year car too. I'll never forget him. He was a middle aged guy. Blew my mind. I looked away and never saw the car again.

My buddy John and I pull up to a Goodyear in his 69 442. A mechanic walks out and says " hey, nice 442! Do you still have the 442 in it?" Our first reaction was "huh??" He evidently thought 442's had 442 cubic inch engines. And this guy was employed as a mechanic :Dou:

Of course! If they were affluent, then they probably owned one.

2 Years ago I parked my Riv at my son's baseball game. As I was walking away from the car 2 old ladies came walking past. One of them says with a dreamy voice, "Oh... I used to have one just like that." Now, we've all heard that before. And it is usually followed by a comment that tells us it was really a Chevy or a Pontiac. So I reply, "Is that right?" Totally expecting her to be off her gourd. Then she says, "Yeah. 69. Embassy Gold with a 430 cubic inch motor."

    :eek2:

I was floored. She looked inside and stood and stared at it for a moment, obviously teleported back 30 years. She was 40 again. It was a kewl moment.

Last month some old guy calls to me in a parking lot, "Nice car. That got a 426 in it?" "No," I replied. "That was a Chrysler motor" (doubting he'd know what MOPAR meant.) "This has a 455 in it." He looked a little deflated and kept walking.

Hard to believe that a hobby as vibrant and loved as ours is, that is a multi-billion dollar industry and adored by "car-crazy" folks can have so few people that know anything about it...

Then there was the time I was pulling out of a parking lot as a blue-hair was pulling in driving a last-gen Rivvy. She glanced over at me and raised her nose in the air a tad, giving me "the nod". That was reet.

This car has absolutely not one emblem or name on it, so you can imagine what I've heard. So I'm out in the sticks one day and pull in for gas and the "Pump Jockey" says............"NICE GRAND NATIONAL"..........I turn to him and say, "I WISH, IT'S JUST A MONTE CARLO" !!!!!!!!

You should have seen him scratchin' his head when I pulled out of the station and put it sideways laying down about 200 feet of rubber. I laughed the rest of the way home !!!!!!!!!!

I hate to break of the story telling but

I hate to break up the story telling but I bought my 1970 Buick Skylark convertible because I always wanted a 1970 Chevelle and they look similar enough. The convertible is just a bonus. Most of our cars look similar to some type of other GM product. From my reseach so far I am glad I went with the buick. But the aftermarket support for buick really is there compared to chevy. One other thing is that our cars usually don't bring in the same amount of money at sell that the comparable chevy would. If my car was a 1970 chevelle convertible in the kind of condition that it is in then it would be worth well over $15,000.
