I've got to remember that quote........I get it sometimes also. I only get mad when they're cocky about it.....it takes a lot to rile me up. Once a guy walked up to mine and really started crap I asked him if he had a problem.......we both nearly got thrown out of the car show we were at. Then I won in my class and he didn't get anything. Now everytime we cross paths, his wife gives me a dirty look and he won't even look at me.

    Give them enough rope...

Whenever I run into these "experts" I always give them all the rope they need to hang themselves. They are showing off their knowledge without understanding the impact of what they're saying. I act impressed by the depth of their knowledge, ask them where they learned all of it. I find that 90% of the time they're OK people who are bad at starting a conversation.

The other 10% are looking for a reaction. They can be the most fun, if you don't give them the rise they are looking. They just keep pushing until they make a complete ass out of themselves. Works every time.

    ....and you are???

In my group of friends and co-workers we have code phrases.

"I'd rather not say." Means YES.

"Nice shoes" means a woman has nice "features".

and "Thank you for that feedback." means ---- You!

That way when some guy with his wife and kids in tow says, "You should paint that thing Black and jack up the rear end."

I can reply, "Thank you for that feedback."

When he realises he is being mocked and says, "Are you making fun of me?"

I can reply, "I'd rather not say, But your wife has a nice pair of shoes."

Ive got a few of those kind of "friends" too Dave. But i have enough real friends to not care about those types too much. Seems like you have your share on the board here as well. :beer :3gears:

Is that your car in your aviator? Man that looks like crap and I bet my car would just STOMP on it! I bet you can't get a girl to even look at you driving a primer bomb like that! I'd race for titles but I don't want your car!

    Sort of like that?

I'M the same guy you are and always put more faith in people than most deserve. I'd help put a roof on a friends house when mine was in worse shape than his and then end up paying to have my roof done.

All I can say is that some people talk just the opposite of what they think! Might be that your talents are something this guy knows he doesn't have! The whole car game is different now than it was when I was young that's for sure! A speed shop used to sell parts but YOU had to know how to put them on! There are more guys now buying speed and buying nice paint these days and I just don't get it! The nicest car I ever had, I bought and it did NOTHING for me! It was like driving someone elses car because I put nothing into it but cash.

Just don't let some idiot change the way YOU are. Keep being nice but watch your toes so they don't get stepped on!

I watched a guy do this once at a local swap meet and it was just great! There was a yellow GSX clone that the driver made no claim to it EVER being a GSX or even a GS for that matter. It was just a super sharp and wicked fast car. This guy is looking it over and talking to his friend telling him every little detail about the car and how HE can tell it is a GSX, not knowing the owner is RIGHT THERE! The owner just lets him go on and on while listening to the story and when it's over, he tells him that it's his car and NOT a GSX!!

Could have heard a pin drop!!

I've been on the other side of this as well. I was at a Buick show once and came across a GS that was one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen. It was way beyond mine and I was asking about some of the pieces and colors. I was mostly trying to gain information on what was correct vs. what the owner had changed to suit his taste. There were also a couple of aftermarket pieces that I commented on just to say "I have those too, I wish I could find correct ones" .....It became obvious to me that this very nice person was taking me wrong and becoming defensive. I quickly told him how nice I thought his car was and stopped asking about the correctness of things. I may have offended him and that was not my intention at all. :Dou:

'73 Centurion, I think you're dead on...most guys just want to talk cars and don't know how to say "hi"...but there are those nitwits who think put-downs are a good way to start conversations... :spank:

Which is why I LOVE Legendary's "code words"!!! :Brow: :TU:

Not a lot of old cars around here, I've only gotten positive comments on the 2NABOT. It's not built to be the fastest thing in town, it's built to be a danged good driver. I like it, and anybody who doesn't, is *obviously* an idiot! I'd probably be forced to laugh at somebody who started talking sh*t about it, they'd be showing their incredible ignorance...and I'd think the same would be true for you, Dave. :bglasses:

    Heck with 'em, they're nitwits!

    Dave,
If you want to get even with this guy; have him take his car to the Diabos for a restoration. That will teach him!

Ok, here's the bottom line. I know for a fact that Dave has done work on all of the Massholes cars and all of our cars have parts on them from Dave's garage or from parts that he's saved from other cars. I won't speak for anyone else but Dave has helped me out with his time and expertise many times! He's had some of the biggest pieces of crap to his now fully restored 70 GS 455. It's time to throw this guy under the bus...come on Dave...who is it? OK, I understand ..it's not like you...so send me a PM! HA, HA!

    Jealous People

Dave I feel for you. This has happened to me at the local cruise nite. This short punk kid that looks under my hood for 5 seconds and thinks he knows everything and starts running his mouth. So I ask him what his problem was and where was his car. He takes me over to this black 70 GS 455 that he supposedly restored himself at a cost of 30k. After asking him some tech questions he started to worry. I picked apart the car after I saw his weakness. The rivets were wrong on the body tag and vin plate so I got under the rear frame rail and sure enough it was a skylark frame. He was so pissed! I looked the kid right in the face and said my car might not be a show car but at least I dont have 30k in it and at least it is a real GS! He left with his tail between his legs and we never saw him again. The people that are like that are usually just jealous! Next time you see this character pick his car apart.

I've run into that too..my problem is that I know everything that is wrong with my car already so no need for anyone else to point it out. I don't worry about the other makes or who is fastest, I just have a cool old car that I like..each to his own.

One time I did have a smartass kid with his rice boys one night at a store say "nice wheels" in a very condenscending way...so I replied "nice face and I can buy new wheels...." his freinds were all laughing when we drove away....not sure what woud happen these days...

Basically, you have to remember that everyone feels the same way about their cars whether its a chevy, amc, or honda. Go with it....

From the looks of it, we've all dealt with this to some degree. I had a friend and I'll still call him a friend to this day, who was the biggest BSer on the earth. The sad thing is that he is SO talented that he has NO reason to lie. He always had nice cars and but wasn't an ace mechanic. I'm sure he sent a lot of the work out but he acted like his stuff was the fastest stuff around! He NEVER raced anyone and only once at a cruise did I even see him do a burnout. We did sort of chuckle about his super fast car not having a posi! Years later I went to his place because he had some jet boat parts and the boat he had was a work of art. He was a machinist by trade and had more custom parts on that boat that he made and they were just perfect! I always liked the guy and I just couldn't figure out why he thought he had to tell wild stories because he could do enough that he had real reasons to be proud of himself.

The most extreme example I can think of is when he told me he put aluminum rods in his 396 Chevelle. I asked how he got it back together so quick because I had just seen the car the day before and he told me he just dropped the pan and changed them. I asked about the heads and he told me he didn't have to pull them off.......................

Believe me I didn't run with a wealthy croud but not many of them did their own engine work as you can see!
