Should I go back to a stock intake?

?

What do I do with the intake?

  1. Stop whining and make the Poston work

    27.9%
  2. Sell the Poston and use the money for headers

    23.5%
  3. Go back to stock for now and try the Poston again later

    1.5%
  4. Go back to stock for now and try a B4B or TA later

    47.1%

I think two guys and a chain attached to the carb bolts and an 8 foot 2X4, well maybe a third guy to line it up when you set it down.

Dave, on second thought you may need a pully and an elephant to lower it down. You don't want to hurt your back!

I did mine alone when I put the stock one on before (different car). Of couse, maybe that's why I ended up wih problems in the long run...

Anyway, I just got done helicoiling my two rear carb bolts and put in studs. That carb is on there nice and tight now.

You may not believe it, but when I got home from work today I could barely keep the car running. I popped the hood and the back two carb bolts were GONE!!! I just put them in last night but I couldn't tighten them down tight because of the threads. I couldn't believe the car ran at all.

I messed with the choke linkage for about 45 minutes. I hope I got it close. It looks pretty good when the motor is warmed up. It used to flop around but now it's tight.

I use a 1" spacer on top of mine and have never had a moments problem out of it. My heads were shaved a bit too with no mating issues from the S-divider. My edelbrock doesn't even have a electric choke and about 3 or 4 pumps of the go juice and vroom. Might want to make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks, even a small one could cause havic at cold startup or idle.

Two pumps this morning and it started right up. It drove to work like a dream.

I would say missing two of the carb bolts was probably causing a small vacuum leak.

Nope! - Still easier to roll the intake over (upside down), pick up the car, and lay it upside down on top of the intake. Bolt her up and push the car back onto the wheels. Don't forget to prime the carb.

    Brad,

    What is a super T10 4 speed?

My 68 just has a regular old muncie in it.

I like your idea about intake installation, I think I'll try it that way next time.

Before GM started building their own manual transmissions they outsourced them from Borg-Warner (BW). Suspect you already know this. The T10 was the BW 4 speed transmission. The Super T10 is the M22 rockcrusher of the BW world; without the noise.

The Poston intake is a bit tougher to tune. We had one on a 350 and could not get it to work properly. We went back to the stock intake and the car went quicker and picked up mph.
I have only seen a couple on cars at the GS NATS, I was unable to track down the owner to see how they got them to work though.
I'm running low 12's with an unmodified stock intake on my 455.

What cam and carb are you running with your combination. I have a Quadra-Jet on my Poston, the intake has the center divider milled about 1/2 inch and there's a 1/2 inch spacer under the carb, it's wood. Also I don't have a choke and this car won't idle well even after the engine is warm enough to open the t/stat. It does idle decently after it's completely warmed up though. It idled much better when it had a B4B and a Holley on it. I have been thinking really hard about putting the stock, 71, intake back on the car. What do you think, if that intake weighed less than a Geo Metro engine I'd have already tried it.

This should work for Dave (A-body car), but remember, Sharky has a full size. It may be heavier than the intake...

Terribly sorry!!! With all that snow on it I always thought it looked like a LeSabre under there. :error:
Either way, since 73-up A bodies ARE heavier than their earlier brethern, I still contend that it may weigh more than a stock intake :Smarty:

Yeah if he'd just clean it up once in a while we'd know what it is. I thought it was a LeSabre too.

    poston intake

I have the poston s divider on my stage one and it works very well.Other than the intake i put the 116 cam in and the car ran a 13.40 @ 103 off idel. The question i have and i didn't see it in the thread or i missed it . Did you port match the intake to the heads. because The intake is standard for 400-430 -455 you need to match them.

No, I didn't port match. I don't know if Dave did either.
I'm going to switch back to a stock intake for the next couple of weeks and see how she acts.

Mine are gasket matched which seems to be the way most guys do them anymore. Although I don't understand the quote about "the intake is standard for 400-430-455 you need to match them" except for the 67 large port heads the intake ports are the same on all the heads. Course when you start cutting the heads all that factory aliegnment stuff starts going out the window. By the way is that the Poston GS116 cam your talking about. I used to run that cam but never ran near that MPH.

GS 116 cam And S divider

Dave. yes I ment port match the intake to the gasket. If you look at the intake you will see the runners are smaller then the heads and they have to be matched. And yes it is the GS-116 cam put in stright up like they told me to do. Im only leaving the line at about a grand and then nailing it because i have wheel hop. I also did not power time it so i thing the car will run in the high 12's. I also am still running the stock stage 1 Q-jet.

That's the same cam I was using the last few years and never was really happy with it. I also had a Q-Jet and a B4B with headers. The car ran it's best times when shifted at 4300 RPMs which was 13.60s at 98/99 MPH. It was quite dissapointing, especially after it ran 106 MPH on the G-Tech.
