Taking apart the TH400 that came with the 47K mile SF455 that I bolted to the TH350 in 2017. I need the Short Shaft and Housing. Thanks, Mart
Not sure but I think I have a parts TH400 with the short tail on a shelf out in the shop. Message me or txt.
I have a complete mid-70’s short-shaft TH400 in Erie,PA,if you don’t find anything else. If your long-tail is 72-older,it will have some of the better parts in it already.
Yea,that’s a good one to use. Just convert it to a short. I think most of my transmissions started as one of those. Let me know if you don’t find JUST the shaft and tailhousing.
Thanks Brian, Does anyone make New short tailshafts for the TH400s? What is the exact length of the short shaft? Mart
No, I just looked this up for a guy.. they make race only cut to length short output shafts, but those have no governor gear. They will work in a race application. I am actually going to take my Oe shortshaft out of my race trans, and save that for a shaft conversion, and put one of the aftermarket shafts in mine. The extension housing is readily available, in a few different forms, from several vendors. They make a pretty slick torrington roller bearing one for about $150 or so. ****** The Buick "short shaft" is 9 1/8 inches long, and has a large groove on the shaft for the slip yoke o ring. There are three versions from Hyrdamatic.. The Buick one I mentioned above Then the same, but without the o ring groove and then a truck one that has threads in the end of it, for a bolt on yoke. Any of the three will work. Do a google search on "Used automatic trans hard parts" to locate the nearest vendor that sells used hard parts. Good luck JW
Thanks Jim, I was just looking at the 4" housings online. And did see some used short shafts. Thanks for the exact length. Mart
Since my goal is to just change tailshafts, not necessarily rebuild the 47k T400, How much do I actually have to remove after taking off the filter in order to be able to loosen the front bolts and pull out the gears? I didn't want to go any further until Ruggles T400 Book arrives...lol. Thanks Mart
Unfortunately, the output shaft is the last thing that comes out and the first thing to go back in. You have to completely disassemble the trans to replace it.
Here's how far I've gone... Does this linkage have to come off? I'm just changing tailshafts. Thanks Mart
Is this a stock application? I know it’s low-mile,but it’s 50+ years old. There are better parts to put in there now,AND now is the time since you have it all apart and out of the car.
You would be making a wise choice to at least replace the lip seals and clutches while you have it apart. 47 year old rubber parts don't age well in a pump that cycles from cold to hot every time you operate the car. The soft parts kit only costs about fifty bucks and may be the difference between soft or sure shifts.
