They are not allowing the Salvation Army in front of their stores because it is not "politically correct"..........let's not allow them to ruin our tradition of Christmas.........tell 'em what you think.........click this link:

I'm not quite sure how to explain it, but they feel that the Salvation Army is somehow an acknowlegement Christ in Christmas and since since they can't represent everyone, they would rather not "offend" the minorities with the idea.

I get on my high horse over this every year........you may just see me in front of Target with a sign that says "put Christ back in Christmas"

Actually that's not the case. They do not allow ANY solicitation at their stores.

They had been giving The Salvation Army an exemption. But some other groups were about to sue them to be able to solicite also. So they said F it and cancelled the exemptions.

Of course you won't get the whole story from today's media.. :Do No:

People in this country are sue happy.

I wish they would stop calling me a "guest". I am a customer, not a guest!

    GK has it right.
This issue has come up during the past several Christmas seasons.
They just now took a firm stand on it.
Living here in the Twin Cities where Target got it's start and is headquartered, it has been talked about quite a bit on the local news programs for years.

I work a grocery store and we have bell ringers out there for an entire month, if not longer, actually from a week before Thanksgiving until Christmas... it gets old. I'm not saying you shouldn't help people, or you shouldn't contribute. From talking to customers 90% of them think they are out there too much, too soon before Christmas. It does get very old, and from what I understand they pay some bellringers? There are some "special" people who ring the bell in front of our store. Lots of them also say that they feel guilty when they don't give, but they honestly can't spare any change because they are hard circumstances as well. I've had it with atheiests trying ruin Christ-based holidays. You don't see the majority of Christians getting upset about Halloween (and it's Pagan traditions). They already have Santa, what more do they want out of Christmas? So much to say and so many people that could be offended. Thanks for you time :)

EDIT: I think any dislike of this bellringing stems from the fact that EVERYBODY wants free money from somebody and if you don't help them you aren't a good person.

its a shame they cant give SA an exemption just because somebody else feels they've been discriminated against or whatever. its their store, they should be allowed to choose who can solicit and who cant. your property should mean your rules.

I don't shop Target.A few years ago a Veterans group asked them to sponsor a picnic or show of some kind, and Target refused saying basically the Veterans are not a group they choose to support.Instead they would rather support gay rights.Ya know, that is fine if they want to support gay rights, but choosing that OVER our veterans is what burns me.I have never bought from Target and never will.I stopped shopping at any of the other stores that are owned by the same company either.

My family and I have a long history of assisting, and working with the SA, in fact this Thanksgiving we will be going to Milwaukee to see family, and will be serving dinner in a SA kitchen for the homeless. Go do this one time, and see how lucky we really are!

The organization does some incredible work around the world. I hope ALL on this board can dig deep for that donation in those kettles.
This hobby of ours can be expensive and it takes a fairley good cash flow to be having this much fun, take a moment to think about the ones less fortunate than we are.

As far as Target is concerned, I understand there situation, besides my wife absolutly loves shopping there, beats a Wal-mart on any given day!!!

I get tired of being solicited regardless of what store or organization is involved. I give to the "major" charitable organizations when I want to, not when I'm guilted into it. I HATE going to a store around Christmas and having a bell ringer open the door for me to guilt me into giving. I don't mind them being out for a SHORT period right at the Holiday as it does seemm to be part of the Holiday tradition but as someone else pointed out it's like they make camp there from Thanksgiving to New Years. While these stores do come into our community it is amazing how organizations and groups bleed them for every donation and handout they can get. I APPLAUD Traget for taking a stand on the issue as long as it is equal across the board with all groups and organizations. I prefer Target over Walmart - I don't see anyone on their high horses as to what Walmart is doing to the small bussinesses and the economys of many small towns in America.

I don't shop at target already because, well, there's no target store here. :Dou:

As far as people that solicit here, the only one I've ever seen in our little town is the poppy sellers (veterans) and coincidently, the only charity I've ever donated to is the poppy sellers. It does bug me when I get asked by a different guy as I go in *and* as I come out of the store but I let it go because they probably all have alzheimers. :spank:

So....they will capitalize on Christmas with no complaints, making money off of those who choose to celebrate that Holiday, but they oust people who may remind somebody that the first part of Christmas is "Christ"?

THAT makes a lot of sense.

I don't believe that to be true.
Where did you hear or read that?

Target Stores is owned by a company out of Minneapolis that also owns Marshal Fields and Meryvn's. It began in 1902 as the Dayton Dry Goods Company out of Minneapolis. The company name was changed to Dayton's in 1953. The first Target Store opens in 1962. In 1971, the company merges with J.L. Hudson, a Detroit company which owns shopping centers and Mervyn's. They now become the Dayton-Hudson Company. They acquire Marshal Field's in 1990.
In 2000 they officially change their name to Target Corporation. The HQ is still in Minneapolis. :Smarty:

    Didn't Dayton-Hudson just sell off Marshall Field's?

We do some printing work for Marshall Field's in Downtown Chicago, & the checks we get from them no longer are from Dayton-Hudson, or the Target Corp. :Do No:
