I just sold the glove box door out of our 71, and the new owner (a member here) would like to remove the lock cylinder. I don't know if I have a key for it, and he thinks he may need the key to remove the lock. Can anyone shed any light on this? I never tried our keys on the glove box door, so I don't even know if they fit. The trunk lock key is already sold with the trunk lid (if thats the one that should fit the glovebox??) o No: Thanks! :beer
The trunk lock key is already gone (went with the trunk lid) The door key was different than the trunk lock key. So maybe the door key will fit the glovebox. Getting a copy of the door key made and shipping it to him will cost more than what I even sold the glovebox for. I guess the million dollar question is...... Does he need the key to remove the lock cylinder from the glovebox door? o No:
I bought 2 new door locks and took them to a locksmith to have them keyed for the ignition key. I removed the glove-box door and took it with me. The locksmith removed it for free. Unfortunately, I forget if she used the key or not.
Glove Box Lock You don't need a key to remove the lock cylinder, but having said that - the cylinder should be in the 'locked' position, and to turn it to that position you need the key! uzzled: o No: :TU:
Umm..I am trying to remember exactly how I did it, but i removed all the locks from the glovebox doors I had... OK, try this: 1) manually grab the little lever of the latch assembly and move it to the latched position (lift up). it will click into place. 2) Now looking at it from the top, you will see a little slot in the RH side about an 1/8" wide...look in there, you will see a small tab that you can depress. 3) While holding that tab in with a small screwdriver, pull on the exteranl chrome piece...it should pop out about 1/8" or so. 4) Now there will be another one in there. Do the same thing, it will pop out a little more. Keep going, and as you do the latch lever will slowly undo itself, don't hold that, just let it move.... 5) It shoud come right out. WATCH OUT FOR LOOSE PARTS, those little tabs are spring loaded into the tumbler, some have reatiaiers, some don't and you may have them and the springs come out...they are very small and easily lost, I suggest you do this over some white paper so you can find them...if you drop on carpet, kiss them goodbye. 6) To put back together, slide back in, depressing each tab as it approaches the barrel...then once all in, rotate to the unlocked position and it will all click back in.Agian, don't hold lever, let it move...you will be overcoming the lever spring so it takes a bit of force, but make sure you aren't loading up the brass tabs... You do not need the key for this. Pic attached, screwdriver is by hole, note the first tab (on mine anyway) is steel colored, rest are brass. later Tim
Here is a pic of the tumbler half way out, note how the lever is working itself back to the open position. Hope that helps... later Tim
LOL Carl I didn't want to mention your name, unless you wanted me to. o No:  Have you tried Tim's suggestion? I didn't even think about the lock on the door. I've never used it in any of my cars. Now it makes me wonder if I have the right keys for any of the gloveboxes in ANY of our cars. ou: If you can't get it removed, I'll refund your money. Just let me know. :TU:
Rick, I will give Tim's suggestion a try! Thanks for the help Tim. It's a shame about not having the key - the glove box door is actually in very good shape. It's one of the few parts that I have gotten lately that is not disappointing. By the way the rear quarter ext. look pretty good too. I bought a pair of wheel wells on ebay that are junk! The pictures looked good. That's about all I can say good about them. I don't think I will be any parts on ebay like that again - too easy to cover up problem areas like poor welding and patching.
Tim, Have you tried this procedure in the key unlocked position. I pushed on the lever to the lock and then pushed the tab in and tried to wiggle out the chrome piece and it would not budge!
Yes, you need it unlocked to do this. Should work, have done it to all my extras....it can be pretty tight, but you should be able to give it a good yank with your hands only (no tools allowed) and break it free...make sure you have the tab depressed.... I just did it when I took those pics for this thread.... later Tim
Tim, I hate to keep being a pest on this, but I have made sure the lock is unlocked (horizontal position), pushed the tab in and and tugged on the chrome end very vigorously. It is a no go! It's almost like the tab is not going in far enough to release it.
I don't know what to say Carl, its worked on all mine, another gentleman e-mailed me to let me know it worked for him.....you don't neccesarily need the lock in the horizontal postion, just move the latch lever up and that should put the tab in the proper place so you can push it down.... It can be awkward for sure.... later Tim
Carl, did you ever get the lock out? My offer still stands to refund your cash if you can't get it. I'm just looking for closure here. It's just not worth any hard feelings, and I'll feel bad if you can't use the door.... :TU:
Rick/Tim, I GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I pulled the one lever back as far as I could, push the tab and pried on it a little bit and it started coming out. It was gravy after that and it is now out. Thank GOD! Thanks again Tim and Rick you can keep your money. Later, Carl
