Sorry, I suck at searching for the right stuff.
Q is, where do I find the # for my GS 350 carb (1970)?, napa wanted the number for the rebuild kit. Thanks!

the correct seven digit number for the 1970 GS 350 carb is 7040244, but this is not the part number. i will check my books and see what else i can find out. maybe someone will post the part # before i find it... henry

my buick book shows the numbers for the 70 GS 350 carbs as follows. 350 with manual transmission 7047045, 350 with automatic transmission, 7047044 the number i gave in my first post is the number that would be found stamped in the drivers side of the carb body. henry

the numbers in my second post are the GM part numbers. if he wants the number on the side of the carb, that was the ones in my first post. this is all assuming that you have the correct carb on there now. it would be best to make sure which carb you have now, since those things got changed sometimes over the years. henry

The NAPA guy will want the number on the side of the carb. It is stamped vertically on the driver's side, just above the secondary throtle shaft. 7040244 if it is the original carb.

Ok, I looked at my carb, and it had 7040240, what could be the difference, because I already called and ordered from napa, does 18 dollars sound right for a rebuild kit?

What are the first steps of doing a rebuild? Takeing off the carb, taking it apart and soaking it all night? That is what someone told me, Thanks!

if 7040240 is the number on the side of the carb, its correct for the 1970 GS 455. i think that carb is jetted a little different than the 350 carb. $ 18.00 sounds about right.
somebody will have better advice than me for the rebuilding.

Then why the hell is it on a 350?, is that why it runs like crap? Thanks!

    Slawek,
nothing abainst your local NAPA guys, but
you might want to consider sending it out to one of the few Q-Jet guru's for peace of mind on your rebuild.

    John Osborne.....in Ohio (I think)

    Norm Dihle in........ Dearborn Mi.

    The Quad Shop.......In Rockford

    Just a thought
    good luck

slawek, the carb number could be part of the reason it runs like crap though you
also told me the secondarys didnt open. (back in the day people would wire them shut or other things so they didnt open to get better gas milage.
I have a feeling there are other things up with that carb. when you tear that carb down be sure to do it on a terry cloth towel or so. there are some small parts that will fall out (a small check valve ball for ex) this keeps them from rolling away.
when you re-assemble you want to make sure all parts move freely (sometimes it takes a little bit of time to get the butterflys on correctly.

now with the 455 carb the jetting/rod combo will be a little bit diffrent but it shouldent be THAT far off. some people could chime in with the jet options between the 350 and 455.

i thought i read somewhere that the carb on the high compression gs350 sp motor used the same carb as the 455??
I sold Slawek that engine and carb i took out of a sylark custom that I parted out early this spring. and from what i understood it was all original

Just being a 455 carb on a 350 would not account for it "why it runs like crap"
A rebuild should do it good.
Yes--disassemble--clean--reassemble with parts from new kit. Pretty simple

70 350 carb (7040244) actually had had larger primary jets, but also much fatter primary rods than the 70 non-Stage 455 carb (7040240).
Much better secondary rods in the 455 carb.
350 carb--69 jets 45 rods, BS secondary rods
455 carb--67 jets 41 rods, AY secondary rods
455 Stg 1--68 jets, 42 rods, AU secondary rods

The 455 carb also has some slightly larger metering passages than the 350 carb. 455 carb on a 350 will always be a little rich coming off idle, but not enough to be considered running badly.

Ok, I picked up the kit and float from napa.

What effects will that have if I accelerated quickly, I gotta ruin these old tires i have on my buick now. :3gears: :TU:

    And what are metering passages?
Did someone think if they put on a 455 carb it would be better???

    Thanks for replies
