Question about items in engine

    Hi,
I have been working on the engine of my '72 Riviera today to try and clean it but also get to know it a little better. I had a question about some items and have attached pictures:
    1. What is the hose for and why is it cut with a cork in it?
    2. What is that dangling electrical connection by the oil filter for and where is it meant to plug in?
    3. There is a top hose from my coolant tank (presumably an overflow?) Where does the metal clip attach, I could not see a suitable location on the car.
    4. This hose is quite kinked, should I be worried?
    5. What is the green wire for and where does it connect to? It was just floating in the air.
Thanks so much for any advice.

    2. looks like that was the connector for the idiot light. Some one took out the oil pressure sensor and hooked up a pressure gauge using that tap.
    3. People here can correct me, but that hose just hangs down. Yes it's an overflow.
    4. As long as it's not completely bent and blocking flow, you should be OK. But I would change it.

    6. Replace those drive belts before they break and leave you stranded. :D

    TrunkMonkey Totally bananas

The clip shown on the radiator overflow hose "hooks" onto the radiator side tank seam.

The seam is about 9-12 mm wide. Some radiators (mostly aftermarket) soldered and the seam is "overfilled", so the clip will not hold.

Ah that makes complete sense, the previous owner installed an aftermarket gauge system.

Thanks for the heads-up about the belt Lucas, I will add that to the list.

Thanks Michael, I believe it is the original rad, it was just recored, so I will check it out.

Thanks Erik, a service manual came with the car, I just find it a bit overwhelming to sift through. I am going to have a good look through it once I have got these clean up jobs out of the way.

Thanks so much everybody, really appreciate the information.

Hey Adam... as you make progress, you really should consider getting rid of the plastic hose from the oil pressure sender replacement. They are prone to failure. ws

Thanks for the tip! Is that a copper replacement? What is the other one made from?

Hey Adam... that copper tubing replacement is available at just about any motor parts store that carries gages and accy's. Make up the compression fitting on the cabin end, and join it to the plastic fitting with a "Compression Union" and pull the plastic out and the copper through. Dont kink it; it may take two people. Always use two wrenches (spanners, blimey!) when tightening the connections. Also cut the excess copper for a final with a TUBING CUTTER for a perfect end.

The temp gage has a sealed capillary tube that you cant cut. The gage I bought has a tube thats about 70" IIRC. Coil the excess under the instrument panel. Rather tedious, but not too bad. Bill

Yo Bill, Interesting pictures! Looks practically identical to the 64 Special I had in high school, same shifter same color, everything. WOW, that brought back memories!! Thanks for posting that!

    Thank you both very much.

Yes Erik, you're quite right, there is an aftermarket pump under there. You knew before I did! I will take an overall photo and one of the plate as requested. What would be the replacement belt for the one that is worn? Is there a guide or video on replacing them? I would like to do it myself if that's possible.

Bill, thanks so much for the info and pictures. Is there a special tool or technique that you used to bend the copper without kinking it? I can see there are different methods, just wondered what your experience was?

    The air pump is missing.

Thanks guys, this information is so helpful!

Should I be worried that the air pump is missing? Am I right in thinking that somebody removed it to increase engine efficiency (one less thing for the engine to drive?) I will look up the Gates belts and my service manual as you advice.

The air pump is just a power robber. Don’t worry about it. Most just went in the trash. Ugly too.

Not sure if anyone answered number 4, but that is your thermostat bypass hose. It's a molded hose with a gentle 90* bend. By the looks of yours someone just used a piece of heater hose and it kinks when forced to bend that sharply.

Easy to get over here, not sure where to find over there.

Thank you so much guys, I really appreciate you all taking the time to answer my questions and provide your advice, I'm really learning so much.

Dave - thank you for the pointer, I will certainly keep that item out of the engine!

Philip - great info - typical of somebody trying to fudge a job!

Larry - that is brilliant, I cannot believe how cheap those belts are! I emailed Gates this morning with pictures and those links are really useful. I certainly don't want burning oil spraying over my or my passengers legs!

Thanks so much Erik, that's awesome.

I tried attaching pictures of the engine but I think the file hosting for the forum is down atm, I will try again later.
