If I have an 800 Q-jet reworked, will it work well if I want to run a fairly large cam? I'm talking about a cam with a 240ish intake duration. I like the idea of using a Q-jet for the street... better mileage- good throttle response.

It will work fine once you put a lighter power piston spring in (or cut the existing one). Also you may need to need to tighten the secondary air valve to avoid bogging since the vacuum will be lower.
And I would jet up the primary jets .003 as a starting point.

I like that carb. My combo is a fairly large cam (244 -256), and I have taken the car into the 11's with the Q-jet many times. The car gets over 18mpg with the same carb.

Now, with the Holley 1000 carb.........

    Rick,
Any other details on your combo? Compression, which intake, etc.
What cam do you have, or is it custom?
    Thanks

I plan on going into the 11's with my modified Qjet, i had problems last year with weak 60 foot times because of my secodary pulloff adjustment (i didnt know that was my problem) its fixed now, but i have to wait till april to see E.T. improvment, even when i was lanching with just the 2 barrels i still went almost 110mph, thats with a mild 113a cam and stock intake, i have also added the new sp1 and went up from a 3000s/p to a 4000s/p. IT LAUNCHES HARD NOW!! on my last 455 i didnt touch that carb for 100,000+ miles, try that with a Holly!

joe, air bags, 15psi right, 5psi left, boxed lower control arms, TA traction bars, gas shocks, 9.5X27 QT PROS, 373gears, hoping for 60 foots in the 1.6's next year. the airbag on the right rear is all you really need untill you are bending your lower controll arms, some guys are running in the 11's with just an airbag and boxed lower arms, and you can box them yourself by welding plate to them.

The Q-jet would be an excellent choice for your ride. It offers the most potential for the best combination of fuel mileage and performance. You might want to play with power valve springs as someone suggested earlier. I stock two lighter ones if you are interested. Also, I run a Q-jet on my NHRA Stocker and on my street car. And I have Super Stock customers that run in the 9's with Q-jets and trip the 60' clocks with the rear wheels. They're the best and most versatile carbs that you can find.

One thing that works great on suspensions like yours is a rear sway bar. Done properly, you can forget about the air bags. The bar should be at least 1" in diameter and should link the lower control arms toward one end of the arms. Then weld a piece of the bar material toward the other end of each arm and to a spot on the main bar. This forces one side of the car to do exactly what the other side does and eliminates body roll. The two smaller pieces are very important. Just adding the single bar by itself is not nearly as effective. I had a buddy that had a '70 Chevelle Stocker with a 454 that ran low 10's and it launched straight as an arrow with this set up. He said he was tired of using the air bags because he had to air up one side so much that the car looked silly just sitting there.

    Hope some of this helps.

    9's with a q-jet :TU:
    wow!
I want to keep the airbags because I am trying to run as tall of a tire as possible on the street.
I was thinking of using this:

in addition to the airbags. I don't know if it will be in the budget or not. I might have to add it later.

Dean, the trick with the sway bar sounds like a good idea. Do you have any pictures, as I am still not sure how it goes together.

THanks... looks like a nice setup. Do you know what your heads are flowing?

    Steve,
I don't remember what the heads are flowing, but maybe Greg Gessler could chime in here.

the airbag has always been the cheap way to go, but not the best, i like that swaybar setup, its just real pricey and wouldnt look stock if you were trying to keep it that way, i went with the TA TRACTION BARS they were about $175, they just replace your upper control arms, and puts them at the proper angle , so when you get tractionthe chassie lifts instead of wanting to come together with the rear end and they dont effect normal driveing, i dont think i need the airbags now, just have to try it out with no air in them. i also have the stock swaybar but i dont thing they do much. making the homemade swaybar that Dean described would be the way to go if you dont care about the stock look, who really looks underthere??

Kelly, I'll be removing my SouthSide bars and selling them if you are interested since I put the HRPARTSNSTUFF bar on I don't need them.
They do basically the same thing as the TA uppers.
Worked well for me until I went Stage 2.

    Rick,

I don't have any pictures of what my friend did to his car. He has since sold the car. If you have access to a fax I could probably sketch out something that would give you a better idea of what I am talking about and send it to you that way.

I actually meant that I could sketch something for Rick and fax that to him. I do have a scanner so I'll see what I can put together.
