I had no trouble going to a shop that had PPG paints, and they were able to mix off the original code.
John you may find matching your GSX turns out to be a lot more challenging today than pre covid. You’re fortunate your car is original paint and that makes it much easier for you to have someone formulate a matching color.
Sorry didn’t get to call you back today Ryan been fighting a POS dishwasher and leaks so seeing this in bed. As Frank mentioned about one of my original paint GSX parts my mirror right off hand may be correct minus 50 plus years of aging (was removed a long time ago though. I’ll look at it tomorrow if you remind me, our house a/c stopped up & flooded and is trying to bring the Sheetrock down in our daughters bedroom so probably need to remind me later in the day. Just love this life
John can you post the formula or text it to me. If it matches your car I feel certain its perfectly fine for my build.
I’ve got a few formulas now so I guess I’ll try to get a spray out of some of these and find out what’s close. PS…. Friend of mine says our Canadian friends up north can still get the original lacquer paint with lead. Anyone know if this is this true ?
John, Tom Bakers GSX was painted back in the 90's. It was formulated with no lead and is a base coat clear coat paint. Problem is its a Dupont Spectramaster paint but I think I can still get it as they were bought out by Axalta Coating Systems. The paint was bought local in NC so maybe I will have some luck with it if not I have about 4 formulas including the one you gave me (Thank you again) so my hope is to get something that matches others.
Silkens and RM suppliers have color maps,....you can mix a pint of Omni,...take it to the Silkens supplier,...have them shoot it with the camera or match it close as possible to the color map,..then tint the gallon for the match,...be prepared to pay 3k for materials at Silkens,..but it's way better than PPG now,...the 2021 clear is garbage now imo The the Silkens clears are a MUCH better product I myself would single stage it,....Nason Fulthane is hard to beat,..richer color,..easy to touch up,..lays down gorgeous and more durable than base clear,..no concern of color variation when painting parts individually,....less film thickness,...and a **** ton cheaper $350ish Silkens clears is $700 gallon the $200 for hardner,.....need two gall,.... gallon of yellow will be close to 1k
All the manufacturers have added more clear binder to reduce coverage so you buy more product,....the solid colors especially yellow Orange red and white base are a nightmare to get consistent coverage and full true richness The best finish you can do is 3 cts single stage,..sand with 800 then top coat with 3cts of a euro clear,..no buffing needed and much deeper than a base clear buffed finish
Sounds like the way to go: https://mproducts.axaltacs.com/mcat...l;jsessionid=72B057683F64A138B90223F54CFC51DF
The only base cost clear coat Ppg you can get is Omni brand it’s there generic brand it’s not something I would spray on a overall, they no longer make the tints to make it in ppg dbc my reps tried to do a crossover couldn’t get close , there dcc formula that I posted is the closest I have seen it is single stage , but when I used it a year or so ago , we had a hard time finding the tints to mix that ,,good luck
Dcc concept doesn't spray like it used to either,...PPG is garbage across the board as far as I'm concerned now the DP epoxy line has been reformulated,..the K36 is still a good primer but grossly overpriced
Rich is in Canada so he may have the ability to purchase original paint with Lead in it. He has multiple Q-Q GSX's so he could know a correct color. I will PM him and see if he will chime in on this issue.
