Am I correct that 70-72's use two of these clips?

I believe the 70-71's do, 1 in the inner fender and 1 in the frame.

There are 2 different styles of those clips and I am not sure when they changed.

The 72 manual also shows two.
    This is for 350 engine.

I need to correct myself. It looks like the 350 engine diagram shows two and the 455 engine diagram shows one.

Now that I've looked, my '71 manual also shows just one on the inner fender but my car has the remnants of an original stuck in the frame.

If you look at the pics of the clips from the assembly manuals, you will see that they have a raised "tab" sticking up where you would grab it to open the clip up. Todd's site shows this same clip and this is the later style version.

The earlier version clip does not have that "tab" on it, and I believe they were molded in white plastic and painted black before installation.
Again, I don't remember when the change took place. It's been a long time since I did any type of Judging on these cars.

    OK,
I just checked it out. The early style clips were used all thru the 70 model year and were changed to the later style clip on 2/22/71, which would make it a mid 71 production year change.

I guess someone should contact Todd so he can change his catalog sheet. I know he is really concerned about making sure everything he sells is correct.

    Part numbers,
    Early Style 1384285 (69-mid 71)
    Late Style 1237116 (Mid 71-72)
    Duane

PS. That is also the date they changed from the top mount batteries to the side mount ones. They changed the batteries, cables, and the clips on that same day.

I can double check but I do know this off hand, the Barn Find GSX I just disassembled had 2 of the clamps in place. One on the frame and one in the inner fender.

I believe either engine size utilized two of the clamps.

When I get in the shop today I'll compare the ones I have to the factory ones that came off the GSX. I recall them being fairly similar though.

I do have these in stock as mentioned in an earlier post.

This one was on my car and I have no reason to believe it wasn't born with the car.

Unfortunately, I pried it out (and the mounting pin broke) when I was cleaning up this part of the engine bay back when I had the front of the engine apart.

I've since got a pair from CARS that will have to do until the "correct" ones for a '70 become available.

    Brett,
Your left hand picture is one of the correct ones that came on the 69-mid 71 cars.

If they are not reproduced them everyone is going to have to do what we did to get them........................take them off original cars, clean them up and re-use them.

PS. This is one of the things I used to look for while judging, like the 2-placer spark plug wire retainers, striped/ribbed hoses, etc..

The build date is 11B if that helps and it is a 455. Original 350 engine. I had M&H make the pos cable. I think that the pos cable for the 350 engine is smaller than the one for the 455. Could that be the diff in the clips that Duane is talking about?

Exactly what I have found. 70 had angle top and changed to rounded top in 71. Weird thing is my 71 which was 5th week March car had one of each. It was right around the time they changed to side post. They both were old so I don’t think they were changed? I never did figure out if that car came with top or side posts. Those angle top 70 styles are tough to find. All cars I have worked on had two clips although assembly manual diagrams shows just one in some 71 manuals.

Figures that would break on me.

Those will have to do until either the correct ones are reproduced or I get to a salvage yard that has old stuff in it.

I don't think either of those will be happening any time soon, though.

Were the same ones used on other GM models? I wonder if any of the other repro places have done these?
