I paid one arm and half a leg for a beautiful grant wheel. It's a banjo type mahogany with a very nice finish. I can't wait till the rest of the car is done so I can install it. I have the original aswell but, it has some cracks and I really wanted to set off the new interior with a beautiful finishing touch. I had first bought the black grip three spoke ralley wheel but, with red interior, it looked pretty cheap, so I took it back and plunked down my arm and half leg to pay for it....
btw...I didn't tell my wife how much it cost.

Do you have a picture of a 64-66 wheel? I do not know what they look like. Would it "work/fit" a 70 Skylark?

    Nope
The diameter of the steering column is smaller in 64-66 than 70.
70 wheels aren't hard to come by. I have a near perfect dark brown 70 deluxe wheel if you are interested

I think the problem is the cost. How many people are going to pay $400 for a steering wheel? It is alot of money. I don't know anything about the process and cost for reproducing steering wheels. I thought that the last NOS Steering Wheel that was won on eBay was going to be used for a mold. I don't know the winner of that auction and I am not sure if he is a member to this site.

I realize the wheel you are discussing is different than the 2 spoke wheel used on the full size cars, but I will tell you this........I would gladly pay $400 for a complete new one with the cap and horn bar. In fact, all I need is a good cap (mine is cracked) and would pay $100 for a repro one if someone would make it. Even just the plastic insert.

I think if you advertise what you are selling and market it well you could not go wrong. You could even sell them one at a time on ebay to get the word out, I have seen other things such as reprinted manuals sold that way. Once the word gets out, they will sell. There is a demand for these steering wheels.:bglasses:

Well so far 44 people have voted, if you could get 40 people to buy a wheel at $400 that would be a total of $16,000. Personally I think $400 is too much myself. I don't think I would pay more than $200 myself. If someone made 100 wheels and charged $200 each that would total $20,000. I don't know what it cost to make a wheel. Is the GS/Skylark/Special steering wheel the same as the other model Buicks from the same time? If so please vote. Please vote on this poll if you have not voted already. I know there is more than 44 of these cars left.

    larker,

Please vote at the top of the page. The poll starter out as just a poll. Then someone had a great idea about reproduction. Then they just decided that they did not care about it. I guess it is just the American way (MONEY talks BS Walks). If I had it my way I would make them anyway, but I don't know where to start:bglasses: .

I'm guessing this movement lost it's steam? If the wheels aren't going to be reproduced anyone know of a good place to get mine restored?

Gentlemen of the 64-66 vintage. Please send me info on these rare pieces and I will personally put my crisis team to work. Can anyone send me a damages or cracked unusable (not bent) one? Does anyone know what kind of material these are made from? Thanks Buicfrank

    more info needed

Also will there be metal or chrome pieces to be made with these wheels? Frank

I have a stack of about 6 of them in the attic in pretty sad shape. The only metal/chrome piece on them is the horn bar across the center, and they just attach to the wheel with 4 screws from the back. The '64-'65 had the same horn button, and the '66 had a style of its own. The big need is for the wheel--I have never come across a broken horn bar--at worst they just need re-chroming.
There is of course the metal core to the wheel, but with all the bad wheels out there, they should be easy to come by.
Feel free to contact me by E-mail or phone and I will help how ever I can--this is definitely at the top of the list of parts needed for these cars. I have 3 cars with this wheel and have managed to find NOS ones for two of them. I still need one for the 3rd car I am restoring now. Second on the list of parts needed for these cars is lower rear quarter panel patch panels--they all need that too.

    buicfrank,
Thank you for showing interest in the steering wheel. Mine is in very bad shape. I thought it was going to bust in pieces. I have to tell you I have been trying for 9 years to finish my car (66 SKYLARK), but nice chrome trim parts for these cars are impossible to find. Would you have an interest in helping us with them after the steering wheel. I'm sure we could come up with a ton of used trim pieces.
    Thank you,
    Jerseysky66

I'd probably be in for a black one around $300.

Thing is, even a nice grant wheel with an adapter is around $200. So an extra $100 or so seems pretty fair to me, FWIW.
