If you want to check the gap, bump the engine until one of the distributor cam high points is aligned with the rubbing block. Rotate the point adjustment until the contacts just close, then back 1/2 turn. That will start the engine. Finish the adjustment with a dwell meter with the engine running. Set the dwell to 30*

BTW, point gap is .017, it won't start at .17 Lonnie:grin: :TU:

Sears. I bet if you looked into it, Advance Auto Parts could get one. Also, some Fluke meters will measure dwell.

Fluke makes the Rolls Royce of meters. I highly recommend them. If you want a good DVOM at a reasonable price, look into an OTC 500 Automotive multimeter. It does it all. They're discontinued now and are probably only available on Ebay. But the prices have come waaaay down. I paid $450 for that meter when it first came out. But its the first one I grab.

If you can rotate the whole distributor, then the hold down clamp is either loose or broken and your timing is probably way off. Start by placing piston #1 at TDC on the comp stroke then move the distributor so that the points are open while the rotor is pointing at #1 terminal then clamp the dist so it won't move. That should get timing close enough to start. Good luck.

I checked the timing pretty good with all the pointers everyone gave me. I got it top dead center and the rotor was pointing at the first plug and the notches on the crank were real close to 0. I got my car started for a lil bit but then it cut off. So im going to check my points again tomorrow and then change my starter because it was dragging pretty bad.

How long did you have the car running for? Your starter might be slow if the battery is low. Assuming you have been cranking the engine over trying to start it and nothing to charge. Throw a charger on the battery overnight with a trickle charge. If the timing is off, it can make it seem like there is a problem with the starter when the starter is fine. The problem sounds like the same thing I had when I put the rotor in 180 degrees off. Backfired horrible. Once I realized the mistake, the car fired up fine.

Looks good to me. Do you get any discount? That would make it better. BTW, pull out a few sparkplugs and make sure they aren't fouled.

Thanks to everyones help my skylark lives once AGAIN!!!:laugh::laugh:
Thanks alot everyone that has helped me with my skylark. I cant begin to express how happy i am now. It runs good to. well i changed the starter on it and bam it started up with a lil backfiring and smoking but after sum fine tuning and plugging some vacuum leaks it starts every time with in seconds of turning the ignition over. so after all the trouble i went through it was the starter. I got my dwell meter with my discount and im going to set the dwell on 30 tomorrow like everyone has said.

Now that it starts im off to either fix the leak on my 200 transmission or look for a 350 turbo. I would prefer a 350 turbo with a good lil shift kit but ill probably just use the 200 till i find a good 350 turbo.

After the tranny im off to breaks, suspension, tires and finally after all that interior then a paint job. Ill keep everyone posted on my progress and eventually put sum good pics of everything up for youall to c.

And by the way to let youll know I bought the skylark for $500 dollars and it ran when i bought it. I GOT A DEALLLLL!!!!:dollar::dollar::dollar:

Thanks everyone ill be back soon. when i need help with everything else lol. Anticipating your responses already!!

    Thanks everyone
