And to prevent overzealous dads from commandeering their sons's projects, our pack has created a "parent's" class!

Here is my entry. I still have a lot of bondo work to do on it, but this is already over 20 hours of work (when I'm not restoring Ken's parts, or working, or installing the new exhaust on the Riv, or fixing PCs as a side job, or...

I glued wood onto the sides of the block the BSA gives you. I also added some on top for the roof. I'm just shy of the max width and length. I even have some Embassy Gold left over from when I shot the Riv a few years ago. Hope the clearcoat I have will work.

The wheel wells are too big, but I can't do anything about that. And I found that the 66/67 nose is easier to carve and looks great without any front bumper. The rear will need to have a bumper and taillights painted on.

    It's a sickness.

    Nice job Yardley!!

I wish I had the talent to do that. I will be starting on my two boys derby cars soon. The pack is talking about a parents class but I will probably not join in. I will take that time to spend with my boys to make theirs better. I try to let them do as much of their own work as possible. Last year Brian lost in the second round, but he was not to dissapoiinted and I learn a lot.

I would love to make the time to build a track and get Alan to help me make timers to test the cars. One timer to measure the down hill part and one to measure the flat part.

Since we are not competing against each other can you post or e-mail me any tips?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Nice ride, i remember when i was in Cub Scouts back in like 1990ish? i went to the semi finals and then the wheel fell off. Who knew? Its the only thing that kept me in Cub Scouts for 4 years. I did have 5 friends who became Eagle Scouts, but it just wasnt for me!

Just type "Pinewood Derby" into google and you'll get a lot of hits.

The weight is supposed to be over the rear axle. And the axles closest to the end of the block should be the front axle. I can't do that in my Riv car. I may just weight it to run backwards and do it that way.

    Nice Job Yardley!!

Yep, the Pinewood Derby is just 2 weeks away. We finished the body last weekend at, of course, the shop. Best place I know of to build a racecar. I just (my son) lol, finished the base coat and is now ready for clear. We did the axle and wheel tweaks tonight and finished the "top secret" weighting just before the paint. A little hint for you physics majors, "Stored Energy". :Brow: Well, we'll see how top secret it will be!!!!

I've done the Pinewood Derby thing with my last 2 sons and was fairly successful in those years. We seem to get the wins, but just come up a little short at the end of the day. We did manage to get best design and paint 2 years in a row, kids realy got a kick out of that. We really want that performance win this year and scarified a little style for high tech speed. I guess this is my last time or 2 with my youngest, so I better make it good...

Whoa Mike... out here the rules prohibit sliding weights or mercury or stuff like that. We have to just weight the car.

Good luck! I'll post more as I finish the bondo and paint.

I LOVE Pinewood derbies!!! I get to attend probably 10 a year in my line of work. You see some of the most unbelievably creative stuff, and some of the most unbelievably interesting "Scout-made" stuff. Everything from an unfinished block of wood (he spent all his effort making it fast) to a beaver riding a log, to a feather-covered I-don't-know-what-the-heck-it-was-but-he-sure-was-proud car. :eek2:

GREAT RIVIERA, Yardley! I've been thinking of making a 2NABOT for a while, but just never got after it. Yours is an inspiration!

"Slickest" trick I've ever seen was to polish the axles, and the put superglue on the axle, then roll it in powdered graphite before it dries, then burnish it all back down. The graphite-impregnated superglue also takes up some of the wheel clearance.

Of course, check you local rules before you start obsessing TOO much...cheating ain't Scouting, and failing tech is embarrassing for everbody!!! :spank: :ball:

    Have FUN! :TU:

I will give the axle glue trick a try after I make sure it is legal here. I really want my boys to win but foremost let them do most of the work and keep it fun.

    Thanks

I better watch out for you at our race as I know you will drive 500 miles to catch me cheating.

Is this axle prep considered illegal?
