Am thinking about using a Pertronix Ignitor coil in my 64 Riviera.
What do you guys think - good or bad idea?
    Any pitfalls/tips/advice on installing one?

    Thanks

Any problems with installation or did it just fit right in?
Did you also upgrade to the full Ignitor kit or just swap out the coil?

What would you consider the advantage with the Crane over the Pertronix?

    The Crane unit stays alive..

I am on my second car with the XR-i, and I love it! I have heard some horror stories from the Pertronix.

So taking your advice (everyone) i'd run with a XR-1 ignition and PS 40 Coil? Does this sound right for use on a 64 Riviera?
Also, exactly what model # of the XR-1 would I need for my application?

Use the MSD Blaster coil - part number 8202

I would suggest the MSD coil number 8200 or the Napa coil IC 12. Both are american made and not in Mexico. Do yourself a favor and skip the Pertronix as well. I only use MSD ignitions myself, but hear great things about the XR-1 systems as well.

I put one in my 425. and it only took like 8 min to install fired right up and i haven't had a problem with it yet.so i say yes .Plus you can keep the old points and condenser in the glove box so if it ever fails you can reinstall and drive home.......just my 2 cents worth

So i'm leaning towards the Crane Cams XR-1 ignition conversion.
    Any pointers/tips for installation?
I've already installed a MSD Blaster 2 Coil which fitted with no problems.

I put Pertronix on my 425 back sometime around '94........it screwed right in, has never let me down, and over 60,000? miles later still working great! Best $65 I have ever spent......and I still keep forgetting to put that emergency set of points in the glovebox. :Dou:

For the people who have upgraded to electronic ignitions...

Did you notice any improvements over a points-system, no matter how small?

Only difference I noticed is that there is no misfiring at wide open throttle.......at least not until the valves start floating. Also, the need for adjusting dwell and changing points is eliminated.

Only problem I ever had was my own fault.....I was stupid once on my rebuild and put my distributor gear on upside down. TOTALLY flooded the engine. I learned that when you turn OFF the key, even with the distributor not turning, you get one spark. That's all it takes....I blew one old mufler wide open! My wife thought I got shot! :Dou: :pp

What spark plugs did you use with the conversion? What gap? How about sparkplug wires? Any other upgrades to the ignition?
    Thanks

I'd vote no. I was stranded once and had a dead car in the garage once. Both times because of Pertronix stuff on the car. I went back to points.
