Frank, I don't have any pictures to show you right now, but....every skylark/GS that I've taken apart has had fiberglass insulation in that area, some type of sound deadener I guess, usually filled with leaves also.

Yea, supposed to be enclosed, but usually not, unless the cars were parked/stored inside, or from a dry climate.

I dont know what 2 do ....maybe fabricate here or start looking for these covers......its not structual but I wouldnt be able to sleep good at night knowing i tossed the fenders back on with the side cowls like that. ....especialy since it being my first frame offy....it would be a bad omen of some sort....

If you want a rust free cowl section I may be able to help . I live in St Louis Mo and I plan on using the rear of a rust free body and the cowl section of my Stage 1

    lead....lead melting... :Do No:

my neighbor (the so called welder) says he can fix my cowl area holes by melting lead.....I never heard of this ...

my other neighbor says just get some bondo and jb weld .... :spank: him

its getting like this in my garage lately...

    throw em all out....

Keep the so called welder away from it and the guy that loves JB weld . I will send pics of my cowl section later today . The front window channel is going to be rusted thru ( my opinion from the pics you posted ) Just looks like thats where the water came from that caused the rust on the floor.

John....are you refering to the whole cowl....??

i was thinking more of this top section being cut out...like this ...with the cut being in or about the middle of dashpad.... :Do No:

whats your opinion.....or is it easier for a novice like me 2 replace the whole thing....? ..i would be able to remove (cut) and can have a welder that can come in......man i should of took a welding class when i was in highschool...maybe its time to learn.....

and is it solid underneath the first layer...??

btw....how is that winshield condition...???? i broke mine... :spank:

Geez, either I'm really fussy or really slow (I know I'm not)...I spent 200 hours alone on my chassis...heading past the 4.5 year mark on my 72 GS ragtop. Every one has different standards, mine are very high so it takes longer to do thing properly....3/16" door gaps, proper clips, new everything, details, details, details.....sure you can pull the body off, spray some paint on the chassis and get new mounts and do a quick paint job for 500 hours labour but if you need to scrounge parts and document everything you can add much more. If you are doing the drivetrain completely (as I did) add some more hours. I'm at the 2000+- hour mark including all the research, parts cars, etcetc.

Some cars will take 500 hours worth of sheetmetal work alone (eat THAT bill!!!).

Being fast comes with experience. That being said, this is my hobby and I like to take my time, its supposed to be relaxing. I enjoy looking at $100,000 prof resto jobs that are not as nicely put together as my buddies and I can do in our garages on a poor mans budget...

And yeah, usually cost you more to put your own together properly than to buy one driveable....but if you're doing it to make money, get the hell out and leave the hobby to the guys who enjoy the cars!! Go invest in the stock market or something....

Rex, sorry just hung front sheetmetal, otherwise could take pictures of whatever you need.....I'll go though my collection and see what I have of those areas (should be something with 1000 plus pics of the resto)....also, I have a cowl section off a car but it has some rust up top so not sure what the rest is like but I can look if you can't find anything closer...

Also, if I were you and you serious about his, I would take the panels off at the spotwelds and replace each panel as needed. That area is quite complicated and you are going to need support etc to hold it all together and lined up...

    later

Tim....like I said ,thats why I click on your restoration web-site on a daily basis.....gives me inspiration... :TU:

My plans are to keep her.....its a 33 year old car and I want to go another 33...if not me maybe my son...he is 6 , and like the tools already.....I am in no rush......work & $$ dictates that...and am trying to do it correctly....this cowl section is my worst part...if i can overcome this part then I know it will be smooth sailing.....besides,I have the best info and guidence...Here on this forum

    oh...and thanks for that lecture...
