Installed a new alternator and now the instrument lights dont work. Everything else is fine. Gauges work fine, just the lights. Also, when i changed the wiper switch, i tried to used the "wash" button and kept pressing it until I saw a spark - wipers didn't move. Any idea what it could be?
Would there be any reason that the fuse fried right after I installed a new alt? Worked fine until I changed it. Connections to the fuse box are good, but how would I go about checking individual fuses?
I dont know. Did you disconnect the battery when you were replacing the alternator? o No: You can check the fuse with a test light.
yes! definitely disconnected the battery. Light for the "high beam" comes on. Lights for the turn signals work. Just the other ones that dont work. They're new lights too. Two lights that go into the clock don't work either o No:
Look at the smallest fuse in the bottom part of the fuse box. The tail light fuse powers the dash light fuse. Usually the rear lights will be out if the dash lights don't work. Based on my personal experience.
Did you replace with correct original type alternator? Have you checked the voltage output from the regulator? You want to make sure you aren't putting out too much voltage now, and the regulator is doing it's job.
No, I ended up getting an aftermarket alternator. Does it say on the reg what alt it supports? Also, how hard is it to replace the regulator?
Your 72 should have come with an external regulator that is mounted on the firewall. It should have 4 wires going to it. You need to make sure the alternator you put on is for an external regulator. The alternative to that is to get an internal regulated alternator, and you can get a wiring kit to bypass the external regulator. Bottom line for you is, make sure the type of alternator you have matches with the rest of your system. If not, your power output could be frying your other items.
Hey guys, quick update. It IS an external regulator. The courtesy lamps work. The lighters work. The clock works. The gauges work. Everything works except for the backlight for the gauges. I have no idea why because the bulb when you high beam works and the turn signal bulbs work. SOOOO confused!! :spank:
What time works best for you? I really appreciate it! I'm a total noob so if it's something stupid, I apologize in advance.
I'll be here you another couple hours. We are at the corner of Airpark Rd and Rt124. 301 367 3630 Dave
It seems the instrument light fuse was blown.Kaivan is going to pick up a couple fuses. Hopefully he popped it while changing bulbs and that's the only issue.
Dave is an awesome guy! Unfortunately, I thought I changed the instrument fuse WHEN I clearly didn't. ou: I will let you guys know the outcome tonight! Thanks a ton for your help Dave.:beer
IT WORKS!! Unfortunately, now the left blinder light stays on (dash only - not the actual light) and my gas gauge goes to E. It's always ONE thing after another!
