I didn't mean "run of the mill" wrt NHRA stockers as I totally agree w/you & as evidenced by Dan's 350 & Jason's 455. I have some serious learning to do there to achieve my goal of high 12's, stock appearing, & streetable but also not building it to any specific set of rules - Just picked up a set of NASCAR t/o rods & Gessler ported iron intake. Heads are key IMHO and I didn’t have flow #'s on my old ones but they seemed to perform extremely well. It's the "remain streetable" part of my goal that'll be a tough balance to achieve but that's the fun of all this is to set & then try and meet those goals. I meant "run of the mill" in terms of that it's not difficult to get a "non-stocker" 455 into the mid 12's in a stock Skylark/GS chassis and if you took that same engine and put in a dialed-in purpose built race chassis that it would run 2-3 sec. quicker. Honestly, I sucked at getting my old car off the line & didn't know squat about tuning (engine or suspension) back then. It probably had better than 104 MPH in it (& definitely better ET's) which for its simple/basic build was impressive in and of itself & really piqued my fascination with these little three-fitty's. Not to mention that they're tough as nails when compared to their much more fragile BBB kin (had an interesting conversation w/Denny Manner about this per our conversation in that other thread @Mark Demko). I was always playing catch-up but it rocked @ the top end. Sometimes I'd win just because the other lane would back off to be sure not run-out, not realizing that I was coming on like gangbusters & I'd take them right @ the line, lol. I'd really like to see some more 350 4-sp. builds but if not, I'll get there (again) w/mine. Even those running 200-4R's IMHO aren't running enough rear gear to be taking full advantage of the transmission and the steep OD if offers to keep a car streetable. My next 350 4-sp. will be another relatively light one too. I'm really a resto guy & "wanna be" 350 racer & this car has almost zero options - Straight bench seat, factory manual steering/brakes, etc (similar to my old one). I'll surely lighten it up a little more (BBB alum. front drums, no radio option, etc.). Goal is 3500-3550 and to be in the Concours class on Friday & racing on Saturday @ the Nationals!
I haven't been paying attention much in the last few years, but I think I'm still king of the hill for NA Buick 350's. Best ET is 11.00 back in 2016. That run set the NHRA national record in SS/MA at the time. Went across the scales at 3410 after the run.
All of that info and more was posted here when we tested the TA SP intake back then. https://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/testing-on-the-sp-350-intake.294649/
So in addition to the fit issues, I suppose that means adding a bunch of electronics to talk to the trans? Do we know that that looks like?
yes a trans controller would be needed to run the trans, but I would be using MPFI anyways so it wouldn’t be an issue as the aftermarket EFI computer can run the trans too. the 2004R is the best bet for a non computer overdrive setup.
Maybe the mods(Sean) can put the trans posts in the trans section. Let's keep the N/A thread a 350 motor thread.
It’s about the complete combo not just the engine. The 6 speed trans gives some serious gearing advantage, and that’s what it takes to run fast NA with a 350.
True, BUT if the engine is a turd power wise, gearing will only crutch it, it will still be a turd, the lower gearing does not increase power output of the engine itself, it just multiplies whats available, same with torque convertors. I want to get my 350 engine as powerful as I can get it NA first.
Stay tuned my porting guy is working on my closed chamber iron heads now. The compression ratio will be about 13:1 and the custom Diamond pistons will be just 29 thou away from the head. This will give an optimal quench zone, which I think is key!
So PLEASE run the car now with it's AL heads it has now!! Even if it picks up only .1 of a second or 0 it doesn't matter.. Either way it opens up a world of possibilities.. Work the bugs out for the members instead of the other way. I mean no disrespect at all Mike believe me.. I know the work you put into them.
I didn't even say anything on here up to this point and you come over here and talk yerr crap about me so you are just trying to make trouble Same thing you did on the stroker thread but conveniently got bumped and locked before I could reply. Also the same crap you push at me in the other thread so who is the one causing trouble here. I wrote to JW so Get off me and do something else.
