Hey Eric. Looks like you got a good start on you Buick. I was looking at your pics and noticed that the windshield had a wiper rub mark in it. I work in the auto glass business and get a lot of questions as to whether they can be polished out or not. The answer is, "Yes." Now that is the good news. The bad news is that by the time you get the wiper mark out you would have a bad distortion in the glass so your best bet is to replace it. Now some pointers. There are a lot of manufacturers out there that produce glass. Some are cheap and some are quality. As for originality for your car GM used the brands Guardian, PPG (Pittsburg Plate Glass) and LOF (Libby Owens Ford). Now for some interesting notes. PPG contracts with other manufacturers to produce windshields for them as well as produce them themselves. LOF is now owned by Pilkington and sometimes if you spedify LOF you will get a windshield with the Pilkington logo on it instead of LOF logo. To know if it is an actuall PPG windshield look at the "bug mark" (small mark in either lower corner of the windshield or in the bottom center). You will notice the PPG logo and some other info. What you will be specifically looking for is the DOT number. For PPG I believe it is DOT-18. Any other DOT number and it is a contracted manufacture and NOT PPG original. For LOF, I believe the number is DOT-15. Pilkington is a higher number like in the 300-400's and therefore not a LOF original. Sometimes you will get an LOF branded windshield with the 300-400 Pilkinton DOT number on it. This means it is a Pilkington manufactured windshield and not an LOF manufactured windshield. I am not real sure what the DOT number is for Guardian but I know it is a low number and believe it is under 100. (I will double check this info and verify it for you.) Also, all windshields predominantly had a tint to them. Most domestic windshields had a green tint. Some had the green tint only and are known as a "tinted" windshield. Others had a blue shade band about 6 inches wide across the top and are known as "shaded."
I just thought I'd share this info with you for future reference for you when you go to replace the windshield. I will post the correct DOT numbers for you soon. Hope for the best on your resto endeavers.

Hey Robert, I work for a glass mfg. too- one of the above mentioned for 15 years. Are you in manufacturing or the replacement business? Its definately an interesting business. Good advise on the downside of polishing scratches.:TU:
