So I ordered the stainless bolts from alloy boltz today. So that makes, oil pan, valley, valve cover, exhaust manifold intake manifold gaskets. Wic oil filter, need to get oil, don't know how much. Got the paint and got manifold paint. Can anyone think of anything else I need?
Your going to need 4 quarts of oil. Make sure what ever you get has enough zinc - I'm running Royal Purple 10W-40. What about new plugs, wires, thermostat, etc. All of that is easy to replace, inexpensive, and more or less required maintence.
Oh yeah I forgot, I got a new coil wires cap rotor and plugs too. Thanks for the oil tip, if royal purple is worth it then ill get it. Should I get the same weight?
I'm just starting to run Royal Purple, both becuase it's a synthetic and it contains a good amount of zinc. I had been running 10W-30, and decided to swap to a 10W-40 due to needing a heavier viscosity. You'd probably be fine running either one, just make sure it's got lots of zinc, or use a zinc additive!
Yea! More 62's! Betty and Beatrice are both pretty original if you need pics of anything. So far all your pics look like you have a completely original set up. Keep up the good work.
Are both of your 62's Cameo Cream yellow? That was the rarest color in '62 - less than 2 percent of all 1962 Buick were painted that color.
It may be the lighting, but they are Desert Sand (RR). Betty (on the left) has been repainted at some point, and it is a bit too "creamy" to be Desert Sand. Back to this thread. Is there a way to reproduce the "Wildcat 445" and the cat on the air cleaner? I have only washed mine, as I am afraid to damage the logo.
If you do a search you will find threads and posts related to zinc. Basically, it is an additive that allows the oil to lubricate under extreme pressure. Unfortunately it has been removed from modern oils, as it shortens the life of catalytic converters. Also modern engines do not need it, as modern cam/valve train designs do not produce the high presssure contact that our flat tappet cams do. There is no need for this to become another zinc thread, so search away and draw your own conclusions.
yes, I recently did mine, I sanded primered and painted it and got the decal from cars inc. It looks great, ill post tomorrow. Thanks for the zinc info, the pic of your 62's had me thinking I had double vision for a second
More or less what David said. It's an important additive, especially for our old flat tappet engines. Ah, I was looking at the pic on my iTouch last night, looked Cameo Cream to my tired eyes  . Yep, the decals are repro'ed by CARS.
Ade, while you are doing this, I believe your heater core comes out from the engine side. Just pull the cover off and it is an easy swap. You MUST do it now. If not, it'll surely leak on you soon. Easy now, hard later. If you can get new splash aprons for the inner fenders they make any engine bay look like a million bux. Why are you replacing the rocker arms and push rods?
On the firewall? I replaced them because the pushrods were messed up and cutting up the inside of the rocker arms
The heater core is removed from the inside under the dash - it's a hugh PITA. I replaced mine once, and after it started leaking again, I ditched the core all together. As far as the splash aprons, I haven't been able to find a source. Please let me know if you do.
I got a cheap sandblaster from harbour freight, put it on a low setting with fine grade sand and got the valve covers, works great. They came out really smooth, and just because these are such noticible parts of the engine, I went ahead and threw some high temp primer on em too, just to make them look really nice once theyre done. So far they look great and I will be blasting and spraying the engine compartment tomorrow, because it is my one day off. Stainless bolts come in Monday (can I polish them myself?) Happy with my progress so far, guessing the engine will be perfected and back in its home by the end of this month.
As far as the splash aprons go... if you have one of your old ones, Steele Rubber sells the rubber for them in a sheet. You can simply cut your own. I did that for my Riv before they were available pre-cut.
Suhweet! Both of mine are intact enough to get a good example to trace. How much did the sheet large enough for 2 run you?
Great news, I decided to attack those exhaust manifolds I was so scared of after the incident with the riv. Ive been soaking them every chance ive gotten over the past couple weeks, did it by hand, tightened 1/8 of a turn, then they all came out smooth and easy with very little effort. So the manifolds are off and ready to be blasted and painted! Engine goes on the stand tomorrow, all the little nooks and crannies will be perfected and ready to be painted with the new gaskets etc.
