always been a fan of loud exhausts, and id love my 72 lark to sound like a monster.

just wondering what combo's guys are running and how they sound, was thinking about a 2.5" mandrel bent system with some flowmaster 40 series, or bullet series mufflers.

any info or experiences or better yet sound clips would be tits. :beer

I got a sound clip of a 69 cutlass 350 olds, on cherrybomb glass pack mufflers. Illegal in alot of places, basicaly a hollow 3 inch pipe with some prickles on the inside. AMAZING sound. Flowmaster 40s are also good. Will post the clip if i can dig it up.

If you want something really trick, put the electric header dumps on. Check out "project 69 skylark" in the street section. Graham is the "gentleman" who started the thread and I have heard and ridden in his car. Nothing like uncorking the headers at a stop light beside some little puke in a Civic.

As for me, I have the Flowmaster American Muscle series 2.5" system, which has the 40 series mufflers. I like it, sounds good at WOT, but not too loud on the highway. No headers on my car - yet. Nobody makes them for a 340.

    Good luck,
    Brian

I have a 350 thats in the 71 GS I am parting that has a Poston 118 cam,TA headers and 3 inch mandrel exhaust with Race Bullet mufflers. It sounded totally bad assed and even the amish kid neighbors thought it was way cool. That motor will be going in a certain 4 speed 73 GS350 sometime next summer...

anyone else think the HUSHPOWER II sounds freakin killer? i think its the best sounding one on there..and by the shape and configuration it looks like a higher quality "glasspack" style...

    Justa350 I'm BACK!

I used a Summit mandrel 3" x-pipe kit and a pair of their fully welded mufflers. It sounds really brutal and deep, even with the low compression and mild cam.

Here is a link to an awesome setup. It is a 3" to a stepdown X to 2.5" out he back through Goerlich mufflers. Go 3/4 the way down the page and click on the sound bar. This is what I am getting for my 72 Skylark in the spring. I think Flowmasters are way overrated and they do not flow well compared to others.

This is a link to a guy with Flowmasters (I think). Big difference in overall sound quality in my opinion.

Can't leave out the GSX. I do not know what it has as far as exhaust. It may be a members ride.

Also check out the Pypes site. They have many clips on there with 2.5, 3 and X's and without. I think their race mufflers are the same as the Goerlichs. They used to sell the Goerlich Xcelerators but now make their own version.

I love this 71 GTO video. AWESOME. It says race pros but they are actually Goerlichs.

I know that sound quality is a subjective (based on personal preference) subject, but I have to speak up in favor of Dynomax Ultraflow welded mufflers.
They aren't as loud as Flowmasters-- they have a low rumbling sound at idle. But if you check the tests from various magazines and online (put in a search online for "best flowing muffler") and you'll see that Dynomax actually flows much better (makes more power) than Flowmaster. I know that Flowmaster is popular and does have a good sound (if you get the right model), but it's not the best in terms of flow. A guy at a muffler shop (that also sells Flowmaster) recently told me that Flowmaster came about during the late 70s when American cars had become weak under the hood, and they wanted to re-capture the sound of a powerful, high compression engine. They've always been about sound over flow. So, if that's what you want, then fine. I have 2-1/2" Dynomax Ultraflows on my '73 Apollo (350 4V), and they sound tough! But that's just my 2 cents.

    UMMMMMM DUH...

if uhave headers.....NO MUFFLER!...then turndowns right after the collectors....if u want the sound...but i guess its hurts ur low range torque..u cant beat str8 headers

That's what I would like to do myself. :Smarty: Too bad I don't live out in a rural area, because that would be very ideal for what I want, but I live in town, unfortunately, and this car is a daily driver. I think glasspacks have awesome sound, but I have a cherry bomb on my car now, that's only been on for a few months, and it's not as loud as i'd like it to be, it's really mellow and has a tough sound too, but too quiet for my taste. Maybe headers w/ dual glasspacks would sound much louder and better...... :TU:

I have turbo mufflers on my "Cat now and they are louder on this car than my GS was with the same exhaust... :Do No:

My exhaust guy (who does all my cars) says it's funny, but some cars are just louder than others.

My turbo mufflers are plenty loud, and flow well, and are cheap.

Smokum and I have the same deal- Ultra Flow Weldeds- I love the sound on my GS (2.5 mandrel bent; H-pipe). What is weird is I had the same experience as Frank with my big car- they were way loud when I tried them out on the Centurion.
I'm going with the Super Utrbo's on the 350 car. More of a price/availability thing. They are about half price of the Ultra Flows.

I have 2 1/4 inch exhaust running off the stock manifolds to 28" cherry bombs with 3 1/2 inch stainless tips dumping out infront of the rear tires. it has a classic sound and the idle isnt so loud but when you get on it, it should be loud enough for any one. but doesnt lose a good tone.

thaks guys glad to hear all the opinions, what brand exactly makes the "turbo mufflers"? round here (ottawa, canada) "turbo mufflers" are a really cheap muffler you can get at a parts store for about $50.

surprised to hear so many guys are running glasspacks, i can understand why though...there cost efficent and lets face it LOL are STRAIGHT THROUGH.....

    keep em comin though guys.

didnt anyone check out the hushpower II from the flowmaster website, like i said earilier it just looks like a fancy glasspack but sounds great....

You live in ottawa???? I have an offset/offset turbo muffler with a tip i need to get rid of. Im asking $25 for it. Wanna take it off my hands? (looks alot worse in the pic).

As well, if you live around here, i would steer clear of the glasspacks unless you like gettin pulled over alot. The cutlass i mentioned earlier (which im still trying to get the clip of), was running them, and ppl always had a problem with the noise. He was getting pulled over quite a bit, he was usually let off with warnings, but that much sound always attracts attention. I guess the fact the car was quebec plated helped.

An odd thing about the glass packs, there is a rpm around 1000, where the harmonics of it, make the exhaust very streetable, at every other note, its pretty thunderous. Just to give you an idea, my bedroom is on the third floor, my driveway is only a carlength long, so when the garbage truck comes, it usually wakes me up cuz its so loud. The glasspacks on this olds 350 were quite a bit louder, not cool at 6:00am. His idle was around 600-800, so at idle he wasnt at that "sweet note", the car was very loud at idle, but when cruising, around 1000-1200, the car would hit that note and all of a sudden it wasnt deafening. Just some experience talking.
