    Help me find this noise

Got some good vids for you, this first showed itself as something I thought was a lifter sticking. Larry suggested possibly flexplate crack si I inspected and found no cracks in the flexplate, the three flexplate bolts are tight, not even teeth missing on the plate.
But the sound seems to come from that area...
It seems to be at the speed of the crank turning.

This day it was clicking each time I throttled while driving on flat ground too, but not on light acceleration. I couldnt get that on vid too much wind noise.

Sounds like the crank is hitting the oil pan or dip stick. When its running place your hand on the oil pan you should be able to feel it.

Might be Torque converter, Had it happen to me with a Vega converter behind a 455, Drove and raced another year after I found out, Still worked OK just didn't trust it much. LOL

Nothings changed with the pan, I could pull the dipstick I suppose.

What clicks in a converter? It fails?

    Thanks

While it is make the noise at idle, slowly pull out the oil dipstick. If the noise does not stop, my bet is also that the oil pan is hitting the crank.

I am not a converter expert I just know that is similar to the noise I had that was from the converter, I'm sure I'm not the only one this has happened to. Good luck.

Thanks. You eventually replaced the converter and it went away? Any drivability symptoms at the end?

Thanks. How or why does a crank hit an oil pan?

Check your crankshaft for end play. That sounds like the noise you get when the thrust bearing is worn.

On my 70 Buick wildcat, the pan was dented in from the tow truck operator where he hoked up the chains to pull it on the flat bed. it was apparent when you looked at the pan .
the other thing that happens is the windage tray cracks and starts to flex and will make the same sound.
Can you tell me more about your engine.

If you inspect the shroud, inspect the bottom and make sure it's clipped in. The top is bolted in and would be plainly obvious if loose, the bottom is less apparent.

Stock 1969 350 with 1972 heads oiling through lifters and pushrods 72 style.
The only engine mods are intake, headers and carb spacer. Also eliminated the dist points.
The pan has no dents. Windage tray cracks..possibility? 350 pans have these?
Can the pan be replaced easily- engine in car? I could use a gasket anyway. Interesting.. no one seems to sell old Buick 350 pans.

Re: Help me find this noise

In looking online this sounds just like a cracked flex plate on a chevy, but theres seems alot diferent than ours. This was the first time for me seeing our Buick flex plate. No visible cracks as i turned it by hand to see it all, the only 3 bolts were tight. You can see in the vid no wobble.

Just sitting a pulled engine on its oil pan, for example, can deform it.

You have two threads going simultaneously. We combined the two.

Engine has been in the car 12 years.

Any way you could leave the old thread in bench with notification it was moved/combined? Or move it to bench? I need lots of eyes and opinions since I determined where it seems to be coming from and now have vids. It is not the lifters as this thread title suggests. May even be tranny which is not technically small block tech.

I had that exact noise only when jacking the car up from front bumper on a 1970 Cadillac
a junk yard flex plate cured it

That is not a lifter. It does sound like something is hitting the crank, something inside the pan. If the car accelerates normally from a stop, and at higher speeds, that eliminates most converter problems.

    That it does, accelerate normal.
Can the 350 pan be pulled with engine still bolted in?
As mentioned I could use a gasket anyway.
