I can't think of where else to ask this question where I might get an answer I can trust... so here goes.

I need to know the Legal Definition of "Semi Automatic"

Example... Some people seem to think its One shot per trigger pull,

While others think it can be 3 rounds per trigger pull.

Everybody knows what "Full Auto" is :Brow:

I'm looking to buy a certian rifle (AK47), owner says it does the 3 round burst thing... But I want to make sure I'm not going to be chased out of the ranges when I soot it :eek2: .

    Any help??

    TIA

I'm not in law enforcement, but as far as I know, anything that fires more than 1 round per trigger pull is fully automatic. Semi-automatic refers to the mechanism by which a firearm cocks itself.........correct? However, don't let that scare you away from the purchase, most states have pretty reasonable FFL application fees for full autos.

Semi-auto is it automatically loads another round in the chamber. It's still one-shot-per-trigger-pull. Full auto means it automatically loads another round in the chamber *and* fires the round.

Yes, semi-automatic means one round spent per trigger pull. Don't get caught with that AK-47 if it fires more than that per trigger pull. There are permits available for citizens to own fully-automatic weapons, but the permits are difficult to get.

What do you want to do, put your eye out? You don't need one of those. :Dou:

    Thanks guys...

I think I'll keep looking for a different one. I might call a couple of shops to see cost options for converting it to semi auto (they will probably think I'm crazy and hang up on me...lol).

Hmmm... I wonder how bad an FFL would be tho.... :Brow: :Brow:

i never heard of a 3rd burst on an AK, only semi (and on some) full auto.
semi-auto is one pull one shot, so im betting 3rd bursts are not legal...since its pretty close to full auto. plus, on those guns, you can pull the trigger plenty fast and still stay in control

My Romanian-built AK-47 is a semi-automatic. For under $300 new, they are great bang for the buck; very reliable, fairly accurate, and relatively powerful. It shoots through 1/4" plates of steel like butter--not even curling the steel on exit. I've got a red-dot scope on mine, which makes it a breeze to shoot. And with 30 rounds on tap, those milk jugs sure can dance!

3 round burst sounds like someone played with firing mechanism. There are few different ways to go about it, but I sure as heck wouldn't be within 10 feet of that gun unless it's papered.

    Here's The 411

    :Smarty:
semi auto = pull the trigger one shot will go off...

3 round burst = pull the trigger three rounds will go off... aka. full auto :blast:

full auto = pull the trigger the and the weapon will fire until :blast:
    1) the trigger is released
    2) or the magazine is empty

all GI M-16-A2's have the 3 round burst... it's a way to concerve ammo :Smarty:

older M-16-A1 are full auto ...a friend has one and it doesn't take long to empty it :eek2: :Brow: ( guys it's not like in the movies  )

machine guns are very very exspensive and very very hungry... but alot of fun to shoot and you must be legal :Smarty:

any other class 3 aka: machine gun questions just ask :bglasses: :blast:

copy this link ...get the ffl collector and relic form ... fill it out mail it in with a check for 30 bucks and wait 6 to 8 months for it... when you get it dont sign the original..make copies and sign them....take it to your local police and get a lic for automatic weapons....usually if you have the ffl they will grant you the machinegun lic... thats what I did...I live in MA...but different states my add a twist.. but get the ffl..its easy....just takes time to get it....and if your a f*ck up dont bother filling one out...

Yeah... I'm already away from it. I have a Legit AK right now, just thought the price was right so it might be nice to have another. But It's not worth the hassle.

I guess One is enough. But I do like the Ak, Just got a 40 shot clip from a gun show here in town... Can't wait to get to the range now. Osama-Bin-Milkjug must pay.

Yep, take these guy's advice...stay away...far away. I may wrong with the exact date, but no fully automatic weapons have been manufactured or imported (legally) into the US since 1987 (?), unless the weapon is owned by a law enforcement department or Govt agency. This goes for the sears required for full automatic conversion. I have never seen a legal fully automatic weapon for under $5,000.00 for sale, and thats before the tax stamp. As far as the $200.00 tax and form, it is NOT easy to get one in most cases. The chief law enforcement officer in your area must sign off and approve it. Some people live in areas where the "chief" is ok with it.

A guy at my work asked me about buying a Wilson Combat 12g shotgun from a friend of his, and wanted to know what I thought. I offered to look it over for him. He brought it in the next day, and I freaked when I saw the 11 inch barrel, and no stock. I told him to get that thing outta here, and that it was a felony even having it! That was the end of that thing!

raises the question , unless you are a soldier in combat , why would anyone need to own an ak-47 or any similar weapon ? i can understand a 9 or a 40 semi-auto handgun .

the law had to do with how many rounds the clip would hold to make it illegal or not. if i am not mistaken up to fifteen rounds is legal more than that is illegal. semi-auto is just an auto loader and fully auto is legal if you have the permit. they wanted to get away from the 30+ round clips some guys had.
