Is this a good cam for a 300

Hey Doc, You out there? Can you come up with any pics? It's basically cutting out the dividers between the Primary and Secondary walls on the intake. Look at some of the modern Aluminum Intakes and you'll see the Two slots running FRONT to BACK on them. NOT SIDE to SIDE. "DOC" tried the same thing on some of the older Buick intakes and it added some signifacant ponies. That's why I was going to try it on a 340 Intake. Gotta do something when it's 10 outside and 5" of snow. I hope this help's a bit. The Doc is pretty well un-known, but pretty smart. So if He answers here, pay attention.

    Oh, "Doc" is a person.
I thought "DOC" stood for something, like "D.O.C."

Ok, that makes sense. I think I have heard of that before, with various makes of cars.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll be sure to listen when "Doc" talks. :Brow:

Guys I had problems with my rodchester 2 barrel a while ago and could not get a good one around here. I went through two remans that were worse than the one i took off. I had an aluminum 4 barrel intake but was told it could not be used on the iron heads. So I went and bought an adapter to bolt a 2 barrel carb to a 4 barrel intake and just flipped it over. I open up the two holes on the intake to match the opening and bolted a edelbrock 500 4 barrel to it. It runs much better and I have had no problems with it. The only thing to watch is hood clearnace because its tight. But it is a cheap alternative to the expensive iron manifolds.

Can the DOC mod be used on a '64 aluminum head 4bl intake? I have heard that you can get into serious trouble grinding away material from the carb area.

I wanted to open up the square bore holes so that they match my Edelbrock 600 secondaries (right now I am running a 1 inch spacer to keep the secondary butterflies from hitting the intake), but have been told that the water passage is too close to mess with that area... have you seen anything different?

    Thanks,

    David

Wow, I haven't realized how long it's been since this thread was started. I went a completely different way after I ran into issues finding local machine work that was reputable and parts that were affordable. Don't hate too much on the choice, technically the LT1 was used buick vehicles so it's not a total de-buick. Anyways I love the LT1 engine through and through. Please check out the thread over at LTXtech and lend me your opinions....or not, whichever you choose.

I still kept all the original 300 parts and trans. I plan to reuse them later in a Datsun 620 pickup with my original plans from the begining of this thread.

    Darkstar,

Thanks for the update on the project.
No hate here for the insertion of the Chev mill in the '65, it sounds like a really sweet ride...but the 300 in a Datsun truck?!
I'm not fond of that idea, but its your truck. As long as it works for you, that's all that matters.
I actually like the idea of putting the 620 back to stock (maybe with a 4-33 diesel under the hood and a 5-spd from the 720) and using that as your DD (30-35 mpg and it can haul way more than your Rio can).
THEN, you could slip the 300 into your Kia Rio and make it a rear driven hot rod...that would definately be one Rad Rio. :Brow:

Haha, I like the way you think. It would take a while to get it into the Datsun pickup, the L18 4banger was just rebuilt. I wish I could DD that truck though, I've needed a truck more times than not and it's getting really annoying not having one. I am allowed to barrow it but it's not the same ya know.
    I could only imagine a 2200lb Rio with + - 200hp.

Quick question, I almost have my frame all stripped and ready to start painting it. What is a good paint to use? I have read that POR-15 doesn't stick well to "clean" metal.

PS. Just realized I didn't include the link to LTXTech with the pictures and info of the project. I'll fix that and put it in my signature.

    Sorry, I'm not a painter, so I wouldn't know.
Also, apologies for the truck comments. I assumed it was your truck.

    Hey Darkstar,

One more comment on the truck thing, then I'm done.
FWIW, if the 620 never becomes yours and you still feel a small diesel rig is the way to go with your next DD, just wanted to add that Chevy/Isuzu, Ford/Mazda, Toyota AND Nissan/Datsun all fielded a diesel mini p/u during the 1980's.
Lack of sales killed them in this country, but they're still quite common in other parts of the world to this day.
Anyway, FYI, in case you weren't aware.

No problems. It's a family truck and stays at my parents but it's a couple miles away so I use often but it's not completely mine.
I would love a small diesel truck though, I've been looking out for a small truck in general, so I'll see what there is for those little diesels. Thanks for the heads up.
