Now she really has created a "state of emergency".. Damn.. I felt bad for you riding out the hurricane, but now I feel really bad.. I just came from the liquor store..
After Fran we hired a crane operator and set a natural gas powered whole house generator with an automatic closer. I cannot tell you how many times it has kept us going during the last 15 years.
Jim, Alan, hang in there. I'm a block from the beach in Sea Isle and I got to tell ya a bit nervous. We will see what happens. Although I cant wait to go surfing once she leaves and the winds switch!
This is looking like it's going to be a mess all around. I'm outside of Philly and they're calling for 70mph winds and 6-10" of rain this far inland. I'm really feeling for you guys on the coast with 100mph winds expected. Only positive spin on this, we should be thankful that it isn't a Category 4 or 5..... Good luck to everyone out there that's dealing with this mess.
I will tell you a real risk I experienced myself. When it has been raining the week before a Hurricane arrives, it does not take a lot to blow huge trees down. When the trees go, the power goes and it takes days or weeks to get it back. The Northeast has been getting a lot of rain recently. This time we have been dry for a week.
We are going on close to 8 weeks.. Sure, the airport got rain, almost 2 inches this month, but not us.. All of the corn here has been dead for some time now..
I'm a little nervous with this one. I'm 90% sure I'll end up at my in-laws well inland. I've got water on two sides of me and I might be 4' above sea level. They are talking possible 5'-10' storm surges so that's not good. And it's a new moon which means an astronomical high tide and of course the storm is going to hit at high tide. If things get really bad, the capital city will close the hurricane barrier and back up even more water to the south. I think I'm going to be pretty much homeless after this one.
Irene who? I dont know how you guys live out there. I will take my summer nights and my very cold winters. Hang on and I wish you well out there.
Its 7:30 PM and we have heavy rain, wind but the tide is low at this point. The worst should be 11:00 pm with heavy rain thru 11 or 12 AM sunday. Stay safe everyone in the north east!!!!!!! Bill
The tree trimmer crews and power crews from up here are heading you way in droves. Hopefully, everyone stays safe and they can get power back on real quickly. We are supposed to be out of the reach pf it here, but who knows???
Despite the hurricane Irene making landfall about 20 miles from my beach house we had no damage or water in the house! I only lost one fence panel in the back yard. Boat & waverunner were inland and no problems. My house sits very high and was just built this year. Looking forward to a loong weekend at the beach for labor day!!! The surfing last night was epic!
Tons and Tons of water in my area. I did stay up all night fighting water in the basement and I won this time. Many local roads are closed. A couple towns hit very hard close to me are Manville and Bound Brook. They spend millions of dollars in Bound Brook and there is a rumor going around that Bound Brook forgot to open the flood gate ou: ou: ou: Also - American Cyanamid chemicals feared leaking into flooded Bound Brook. http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2011/08/parts_of_bound_brook_south_bou.html Here is a picture I took not too far from my house
Back online. We lost several trees and our power was off for about 50 hours. We were lucky!!! My neighborhood had little damage some trees and shingles for the most part. 3.5 miles across the sound they had 5' of sound side surge and most people within a block or two of the sound loss their first floor. In Manteo most of the downtown businesses and homes had 4' of water in them. Hatteras Island and NC12 was cut in half 5 times. Alan
Wow.. The people on the island are literally stranded. That road won't be fixed for months.. What a mess..
Update - three more trees fell in our yard. Total: five. I will most likely have to rent a wood chipper to get rid of the stuff...
How strong were the winds out there? We have 100 MPH wind storms every winter around here and it seems that we don't get near the damage that you guys get when the storms hit. Exception being the storm at the tail end of '07 were the 100 MPH range winds and heavy rain lasted four days. That was the only one that I lost any trees in, and it was about a week before I could get out of town in any direction. Thousands of acres of timber down. Must be flatter going away from the ocean there? We have a primary dune that is maybe 20 - 25 feet high about 1/4 mile from the ocean and lots of trees to slow the wind down. Bigger hills as you go inland a bit.
