Your going to have to time it. The timing will change a little with the Pertronix install. Your car may benefit from some more initial advance.
Ok so now I know the timing is off I’ll get that right , install the pertronix hopefully in the right spot this time . Then check the timing again ?
Turn your crank to 15* BTDC. Set your distributor to the mark on the rim (#1). The vacuum tube at 7:30pm dump some fuel and try. If no cough or anything try 180* out. You need to find HOME with the Pertronics on the baseplate for sure. I've had BAD luck with Pertonix only recently!
so I timed the car to 4 tdc from 0 so it was out quite a bit . installed the pertronix again and the same thing happened , backfire ! then I tried using the original ignition wire in the car and it fired right up . had been using a wire going from the accessory in the fuse box to the coil that someone advised me to . had to check the timing again which was out quite a bit again and drive a couple of times for it to settle down . car starts good , idles better and is a smooth ride . cheers everyone for the help
Guessing spoke too soon . Drove it home from work and everything was fine . Left it outside for a couple hours then go to put it in the garage . It idled rough in park and in drive with foot on the brake . I’m getting fed up now, it has to be something I’ve done . Any ideas guys ?
It It was working fine yesterday when I installed it and today at work . Two hours after getting home and starting it up though it ran rough and I didn’t do a thing . A guy advised me to run a wire from the accessory, only worked when I used the one in the harness . So I just put the points back in and timed it and it’s still running really rough . Somethings happened and I don’t know what . I’m no expert mechanic but I will try my best to fix things .
Assuming you have properly timed it...I would get a can of starting fluid and see if you can identify a vacuum leak. Or your distributor assembly is BEAT, and in California you would be labeled a Gross Polluter.
I’m probably thinking it’s toast to seeing as I put the points back in and it’s still the same . Would a complete HEI distributor be the way to go if that’s the case ?
I used a new coil with the pertronix and the original coil for the points so I don’t think it’s that Bill . Yes the guy said something about a ballast so to use the wire
The wire itself is a resistor (ballast). It plays an important role in limiting the voltage to the points.
Lets take a deep breath here and start with the basics. Lets start at step one instead of skipping all the way to step 12. Pertronix will run on the factory resistance wire. Ive called Pertronix in the past and they have said that theyre units will run on straight 12 volts . So wiring it to the battery wont necessarily damage it. Why would it run well with the Pertronix then 2 hours later run rough? Id have to think its a simple problem. Did the choke stick closed possibly? Do you have a vacuum gauge?
I did look all over the engine to look for obvious things like plug wire off , vacuum lines , lose wire etc. don’t have a vacuum gauge
Is it possible you forgot to tighten the hold down bolt for the distributor? Recheck the timing, check to make sure the choke isn't sticking, recheck the firing order.
