I've never seen a condenser attached to the coil. I think you can pull it.

Radio noise suppression, you can eliminate it.

That’s what I thought it was but thought they were under the cap . I have a factory radio so shouldn’t get and interference if I remove it ?

    TrunkMonkey Totally bananas

Black Crow loves it when you take the suppression caps off yer ignitions.

Rule the night and bring the burn...

So I install everything and fire it up and get an explosion and smoke coming out the carb . Doesn’t even attempt to start . This was a couple weeks ago and as I needed the car I put the points back in to drive it . I put the pertronix in 180 degrees from where the points where as this was the only holes that lined up . Tech guy at Pertronix said this was perfectly ok . I checked my timing today (points still in) and was this much off !!! Could this amount be enough to cause the bang and smoke from the carb ? 6FD45850-BD5E-49D3-9EEB-630C63A9B4CC.jpeg

The little black 'box" should of been mounted where the points were mounted. Here's the install on my 455.

Why don't you simply start over and set your #1 piston to TDC and install the distributor with the rotor pointing to #1 tower. Make sure the plug wires are installed properly 18436572. It sounds like the timing may have been retarded a bit. Backfire thru the carb is a give away clue for this condition. Turn the distributor a little counter clock wise and the car will probably start right up. From there you can set the timing and play with the carb a little and get the car running fairly well - good enough to start fine tuning a little more.

Turn your distributor 180* and try again.

I think the OP mounted the little black box where the condenser mounts instead of where the points mount. Essentially mounting the Pertronix 180 out. That might account why the car was acting like the timing was off and then started with the points back in

Well ... that would do it. I didn't think there enough holes in the plate on the condenser side to mount the Pertronics. I remember putting mine in with relative ease and only had to worry about proper shimming and tweaking the pick up so that it never contacted anything no matter how it was loaded up. It's been many years since I installed mine and it still works well ( until now that I said that).

Thanks for the reply’s . I tried to mount it where the points were but the holes just weren’t lining up . I’m really curious now so will take another look . Cars timing hasn’t been touched since I bought it last December and runs fairly decent so never checked it .

So, you are doing all this with the distributor in the car? And you haven't removed it?

Check out the pic I posted. The Pertronix unit uses the two screws that the points use

Yea I’m going to try again and see , I guess you have the same factory distributor as mine so should drop right in
