Hey guys here is my pickle. I don't live in the nicest of areas and am concerned about having my buick stolen. So I wanted to install a simple kill switch. Can anyone give me a step-by step on the best way and place to install said switch. can I use a simple toggle switch and put it in line between the ignition and the fuse block? Please help because I am bringing my car home from my in-laws tomorrow and would like to have this on before I bring it home; or does anyone have any other ideas? Unfortunately I can't move out of my current neighborhood because i got suckered into a 1yr. lease. Stupid slumlor. . . .errr landlord but thats a topic all in its own. Please help i'm nervous!!!! I mean I could disconnect my battery everynight but thats pretty obvious.o No:
can I put that inside of the car? I need something that would easily accessable and would rather put it under the seat. . . . .
Use a headlight dimmer switch, hide it under the carpet up above the factory dimmer. After you shut the car off push the switch with your foot. Push it again to start it.
where do I run that? Directly from the ignition(brown wire correct?) to the switch to the fuse block? Would anyone have an diagram?
Just a suggestion - Maybe whoever has some advise for you could PM you instead of all the little tricks we do to protect our older cars being posted on the web for any thief with a computer to see. o No:
I'm willing to give an email if that helps LOL; I'm just super paranoid cause I live in the hood!!!!!! I have even thought about going and buying a club!!!!!!!
pull the coil wire off until you get something worked out. On my other 72 I had a kill switch mounted in my trunk in one of the holes. It was a toggle switch running to the coil under the carpet and through the firewall. I just can't remember which wire it attached to on the coil.
A hacksaw, about 45 seconds, a little elbow grease, and an experienced thief will have cut a nice little slit in your steering wheel to slide that club off. And removing a coil wire will cause a seasoned thief to use a plug wire in its place and then continue stealing/driving your car. These both may be good ideas still, but they will not stop a motivated thief. I dont have a proven way to protect a car, but I would say your on the right track with the kill switch. I park my car in behind 2 cars every night. Right next to my window. I know how much it sucks to always be worried about your car and I wish you luck.
I was thinking of putting my wifes car behind mine if all else fails but the bad thing for me is that where our parking is; its no where near my window. I guess I could park it in the back in the alley but just saying that doesn't make me feel all warm and fuzzy. If I got a club it was gonna be a brake one but still your point is still true. . . . .grrrrr stupid ghetto!!!! Stupid California.....Stupid lazy people who would rather steal than get a freaking job!!!!!!!!:blast:
dont buy the club...if you want something on the steering wheel then get this. http://www.summitracing.com/search/...heel-Locks/?keyword=gorilla+lock&autoview=SKU this is the best brake lock i've seen http://www.universally-yours.com/Autolock.htm another kill switch for a fuel pump would also be cheap and good.. use a reed switch and carry a magnet to activate it
There's several ways of making an inconspicuous kill switch. The cigarette lighter can be rewired to ground when pushed in, the old dimmer switch under the carpet, rewiring the dome-light, etc. Even the MSD 6AL has a wiring diagram to install a kill switch on the white wire if necessary. I park my car in the garage with another car parked in the driveway behind it. When I used to live in an apartment, I'd park it in with the 2nd car. You can hook up two kill switches as a backup, like depress the dimmer and flick a toggle together so it's not one or the other, but both that need to be used to start the car. I wouldn't wire anything under the seat though. I'd put it under the dash, maybe behind the ash tray or up high inside, or in the glove-box where you can lock it. I used to have a toggle that you had to hold up to turn on that was wired to the starter. Unless you held the toggle up while turning the key, no starter. The toggle was tucked away behind the little tri-shield panel on the right-most side of the dash.
Gosh I am thankful I live out in the sticks where I don't have to worry about such things. My alarm system consist of a big dog and guns. Most nights I leave my keys in my cars and trucks so I don't lose them.
x's 2 but I have been getting a little uptight lately and removing the keys as well as locking my garage..
take the coil wire with you! step 1 Figure the rest out via PM so everyone and their brother doesn't see this post step 2 When is the lease up? step 3 Good luck step 4 Scott
http://autospeed.com/cms/title_The-Worlds-Best-DIY-Immobiliser/A_107975/article.html this is a great immobiliser....
A cheap on/off switch. Hide it in the ash tray, under the dash, underneath next to the radio, etc. One side grounded to anywhere there is a good ground, the other side wire goes to neg post on the coil...works great you can crank all day long & it won't start. If you want more, find the purple wire coming out of the steering col that should be your neutral safety s/w wire, cut it, put the 2 ends onto a second on/off s/w and you've doubled your protection/confusion factor to a thief.:bla:
put a trick removeable steering wheel. i use the coupler from summit on a 32 roadster i built, the guy was 6'2 , made it easy for him to get in, and noone could steal it. if a thief brings thier own steering wheel setup to get your car, well your **** out of luck!! paul 66 lark gs 401 nailhead turbo, i run a switch that grounds the relay that energizes my msd box.
