Cliff Ruggles would disagree with Doug Roe. Have a look at Cliff's post at the end of this thread.

It depends on what size needle and seat. A .149 (which most people upgrade to) can't take the pressure but has more volume. A .125 has to have high pressure to deliver the volume but also can take it.

Themoquads have the same "issue" but at least they have 2 floats so not as critical.

Well, the CV mechanical pump I have puts out 8-9 psi at idle. I see 10 sometimes when I first start the engine cold. The Q-jet doesn't seem to mind it at all, and there is no evidence of flooding ever. I have run 11.60's with the Q-jet, and my AFR gauge says 13.0 in high gear, WOT, at the track. The pressure drops 1-2 psi if that at the track in high gear, second half of the track. It's hard to look at the gauge during a pass. Easier to see the AFR because it is right under the glove box next to the door. I may move the Fuel pressure gauge over there too.

    What needle and seat?
I like to regulate it back to 6.5 on a Qjet...then have little or no drop. Runs cleaner at idle with lower pressure as well, IME.

JW did the QJ for my engine. Don’t know what is in it.

Ok. First the good news. Out for a drive today I left it in second on take off and it shifted by itself right at 5000 rpms.so I can just leave the governor alone for now. I had barely 5psi of fuel pressure at idle so I was optimistic that when I adjusted it my shift into third gear issue would go away. I adjusted the fuel pressure regulator up to 7psi at idle. Running through the gears it dropped to 6psi at the 1st to 2nd shift and stayed there well into third. So I do not feel it is a fuel issue. BUT again the shift into third at 5 grand is like third isn’t even there. I feel it shift but it’s like I’m topped out until I let off the throttle momentarily and back into the gas, then she goes! Any ideas? I’m really leaning towards blowing through the torque converter. It is an unknown unit with no markings on it that I remember.

Maybe it isn't shifting into 3rd until you lift. I'd look at the governor. When you lift, vacuum increases which will make it shift. If it was the converter, I think you would feel it down low as well.

Usually if you lift some and it picks up it is lean.

Larry. What would I be looking for in the governor?
Bquick. Is the only way to test if it’s lean to hook up an A/F gauge. I currently do not have one installed.
    Thanks

Check the weights, inner and outer. Make sure they move freely and the valve inside the stem does as well. If the converter is very loose, you may not be able to feel the shift, but you should see the RPM drop after the shift. It is really hard to tell what is going on with the car. Hopefully, it isn't going lean like Bruce thinks. Holding it wide open as it is going lean can induce detonation, and you can hurt something.

I like to use an EGT (exhaust temp gauge). If lean it will be high. Better yet have a passenger watch it and see if it spikes when it does what it does.

To see if you are "blowing thru the converter" you can try shifting at 5500 rather than 5000 on the 2-3 that way it will be tighter before it shifts. But...with a 2500 converter....even 4000 it should be tight....unless it is going away.

I see the EGT's are relatively inexpensive but where does this attach to the exhaust? Is it a weld in a bung type deal or can it be installed near the turndowns at the very rear of the exhaust. I will try a 5500rpm 2 to 3 sfift this weekend.
    Thanks

Easy...no welding bungs. Just drill one hole and clamp. Need to be close to head.

FC79B86D-6060-42DE-A781-46E754D6AA21.jpeg Good news! Second time at the track and I ran a best of 12.51 @ 106. Woohoo. I added a stall and it shift good into third and just keeps pulling. Let me know what you guys think of my time slip please. What a great day! I shaved .6 off my time. The adrenaline rush is awesome. Maybe eventually I won’t be so nervous, but God it’s fun out there.

    Ethan beat me to it:D

So all your problems were from the torque converter?

60ft should be around 1.68-72 for that mph/et was it slipping a little?

I've had two combos that ran very similar with 1.63 to 1.68, still not bad by any means tho congratulations, one tenth improvement in the 60ft will equal 2 tenths on the big end

You have the mph for 12.20's if it leaves harder

Mostly the converter. The second to third shift is similar but now with the new converter it just keeps pulling. and it would drop about 200 rpm so right at 5000 And somehow keep pulling through the entire run and I went through the traps at 5000 rpms. A friend that has a lot of experience in racing said after the second run I must be slipping so I let out some air in the rears and gave her heck on the launch n it was better. I remember thinking as I shifted into third “good run. Good run, just keep it floored n keep it straight”
