If any of you are interested and have a shortwave radio, the Amateur Radio Hurricane Watch Net is operating on 14.325 Mhz. It's quite interesting to listen to reports coming in from the tropics and mainland US. You can just about track the storm from the reports. The National Hurricane Center operated by NOAA is on frequency also as they have an amateur radio station in the Hurricane Center manned by an licensed amateur radio operator to pass traffic (messages) concerning the storm. The call sign for the Hurricane Weather Center is WX4NHC. This evening the frequencies for the North Florida Emergency Net will be 7.242 Mhz and 3.950 Mhz. Those frequencies will be used for communications during the overnight periods as 14 Mhz becomes somewhat unreliable after the sun goes down.

Besides Buicks, my other hobbies include amateur radio (call sign is KG8S) and weather. I have an associates degree in Meteorology along with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. This storm looks to be a bad one, possibly as bad or worse than hurricane Andrew. Everybody in or near it's path better take a serious look if they should stay or leave. I would highly recommend leaving.

    I've been going non-stop from 5 am...

boarded up and secured 2 10,000 ft warehouses, 4 boats, 11 cars and trucks, 2 Sea-Doo's, 2 car trailers, forklift... shuttered the house, picked up 2 diesel and gas generators, fueled up, cleared the yard...whewwwweeee

now they just said it turned a little to the north?? and hold up on the shutters a tad... :Dou: after they told 1 million people to evacuate??? WTF??? evacuate where? in the Everglades??? i'll just float around in my living room in a bean bag

    geez... :Do No: :puzzled: :jd:

I guess you guys can blame me, I'm set to close on my house in Port Orange, FL in a couple weeks. So far this year, that area was hit by a hurricane for the first time in 40+ years and now Frances is on the way. The good news for the upstate NY guys is that it probably won't snow for another 5 years after I move!

    Brad,
Is there a website that simulcasts shortwave by chance? My 1937 Era Westinghouse Shortwave Radio is at my ex's. I haven't had a chance to pick it up yet!

Amateur frequencies cannot be one way communications. In other words, transmissions have to be between licensed stations and not to the general public. That is the function of general broadcast (your AM and FM stations). The FCC would take a dim view if amateur radio started to broadcast to the general public. I do not know of anything that simulcasts any amateur radio transmission (which happen to be in the shortwave spectrum).

I'm getting a little nervous about this one. I live in the extreme southwest corner of seminole county bordering orange county. We lost power for 3 days after "charlie" but were lucky and got virtually no damage. Others around us got pretty beat up. It seems like the hurricanes spawn small tornadoes randomly. There are trees twisted and splintered mid-trunk with the tops gone. There are still massive brush piles and trees laying everywhere. I just cannot imagine what this storm will do. I'm gonna board up some windows in the morning , pre- wire my generator into my panel and hold on!

My uncle in Port St. Lucie is boarded up and now in Naples.

My aunt is staying at her house in Orlando.

One cousin is staying in Jacksonville, cousin #2 took a flight with his soon to be wife to her hometown in Nebraska, cousin #3 is going to his girlfriends in TN.

But if the storm moves further north then it will be closer to Jacksonville and Orlando.

    Man what can you do:(

The NOAA predicts the storm will take 2 whole days to get across the state of FL. Check it out and the updates on www.noaa.com

There is not much we can do from here to help the people who will soon be in need so I plan on at least making a donation to the American Red Cross. Money and blood!

Lets see what else we all can do!

    Jim...

Right there with ya... It seems that after Charlie, the TV guys are dead set against commiting to a specific path. Lucky for me I'm on the west coast... dead west of the big lake. Still talking about level 1 winds here, but with the way they keep dropping the path line, who knows.

I just got back from a 3hr wait of only 3 stations left out of around 50 that still have gas. I suspect they are out by now as well. After, its the ice that people will kill for.... I've never seen anything like it.. I felt like Mad Max lookin for gas & ice

Hey.... If you need a safe place to put the buicks....hehehe.. let me know:Brow: :Brow:

Good luck, time is running out.
