Nice day here and even nicer tonight and tomorrow. Got up to a balmy -36C today ( about -45C with the wind) Tonights forecast is -44 C plus the wind chill which will bring it to a forecasted -55 C. Thats about -68 F for those of you south of the border. No plug in where I park at work so I had to go out and start the truck every couple of hours today..........then the price of gas just jumped another 7 cents a litre. ( about .28c a gallon)..........then I opened my heat bill for last month 207.00. Are we having fun yet? ou: Mosquitoes aren't too bad though:bglasses:
Been there... Dave, Spent time in Alaska in the service. Lived about 30 miles east of the confluence of the Chena and Tanana Rivers. Windy as the dickens and cold. In the valley, saw -78* F one morning, ambient, no wind chill. I can't wait to go back.:Brow: Seriously. If I could have found a job when I got out, I'd still be there!!ou: Down here, it's 0*F with about -10*F wind chill. Had about 16 inches of snow sunday and monday. Having a blast getting in the driveway after the snowplows come by every day.:af: At least they have the roads cleared. Wouldn't want that job.
Re: Been there... I lived in the Yukon for about a year in the late 70's, still have family in Whitehorse so I can relate to Alaska weather. The coldest day I had that winter was one morning at about -60+. I was driving a 66 Chevy van with a 6 and 3 on the tree. Made some really rude noises when it started and took forever for the oil light to go out. Then I had to feather the clutch ( in neutral) for a while to get the trans to turn (gear oil). Then the rear diff was frozen solid. Finally got moving and it felt the tires were square. My old boss up there was a former trucker and told a story about a wheel bearing that shattered from the cold. Having lived in the Yukon and now on the Canadian prairies most of my life I should be used to this but it just doesn't seem to get any better. I do find the cold here is different than the cold on the Yukon/Alaska. Here we always seem to have some wind and it feels cold. In the Yukon I didn't really feel that cold at first, then I would realize, Hey....... I can't feel my feet anymore! More of a "dangerous" cold. I understand what you're saying about still being there if you could have found a job. Once you've lived in the north it gets in your blood. Beautiful country, even in the winter.
Getting colder We had snow on and off today. A few inches downtown Chicago, a few inches back home. Now the temp is taking a nosedive. 14.2 at 9:15 pm. I know a lot of you have it colder than we do, but this still blows. It figures, though. This weekend is the World of Wheels at McCormick Place. Most years it's snowed and been super-cold. We have a club display of 9 Buicks this year, and I don't envy them trying to get the cars in with as little dirt as possible. Then they get to spend most of Friday cleaning and waxing and buffing. At least it's indoors.... And it's supposed to be really cold! ShariB
Great for snowmobiling Left this morning at 7 it was -29 F unloaded at 8:30. Carbs froze at 9:30. Only rode 100 miles today but will do more over the weekend. Should be warmer high -7 f. Nothing like traveling at 60 mph when its -20 in 18 inches of powder snow.:TU: :TU: :TU:
Just a little Dave Last weekend I frost bit my chin. Today I had to ride with the face shield up since it frosted over for a few miles. My eye lashes had ice on them. Needed to stop and melt the ice with my fingers... Must work tomorrow but the weekend is near..........
You're still riding cycles Ed??????????????? I don't even want to ride in my car!!!!!!!! Dave's right - your NUTS!!!!!!
Temperature has been 'tolerable', but we're expecting 10" or so of the white stuff by tomorrow morning!!ou: Probably more the next day too.
Woke up this morning in Northern North Dakota and the temp is a minus 45 degrees. Wind chill is about 75 below. Wife's car had a flat tire and no way im changing it. She got a ride from a co=worker. Have a nice day, Ed K
I'm in Antarctica with my Air National Guard unit. It's in the low teens here at McMurdo station. It's sunny now and now worries about nights beacuse the sun doesn't set this time of year. These are the summer temps. At least it's still warmer than it's been back home in New York. South pole is around a 3 hour flight and is much colder (-25f).
67 degrees out here in So. Cal. There are thongs everywhere, and that's just the guys!!!!!! Ya gotta figure Calif and all.....
Re: Re: Been there... Hey I hear ya! I did a year in Inuvik... you just get used to -50 after a couple days...
Re: Re: Re: Been there... Typical Canadian attitude, I say the same thing:beer Now repeat what you just said and think about it for a while. We must all be nuts to live here. ou:
