Somehow, I doubt that people will cut out spending for those products. Maybe the more expensive ones, but they'll still buy toilet paper.

I can tell you 1st hand it would not take much time to run a feeder line from ANWR to over to Flow station and down the Trans Alaska pipeline.

I own Contracting bussiness on the North Slope of Alaska
I can almost hit ANWR from my shop with Rock. It is not far from the Current infrastructure.

I dont think it would take long to get a well on line.
In case your wondering their is nothing their in ANWR, flat as a pancake with an occasional arctic Fox, Caribou and Polar Bear. The Animals roam freely and dont mind what we do their.

The Proposed Gas line is really what could help with energy. Alaska is sitting on enough Natural gas to power 1/10 of the US's Gas needs every day for many years.

My situation is a little differnt as high energy prices spurs activity for me on the North slope, wich in turn allows me to hire more people that in turn have money to spend in the economy.

Non the less it comes back to me in fuel prices as well. How about a heating a house at -40 below sucking down 400 gallons of diesel per month at 4 clams a gallon :eek2:

Any of you Guys ever get to Prudhoe bay and need a place to stay, look me up. I can help you out.

    Bring a Coat!

After my plant closed in Indiana I moved to Texas in 2006. I work for an AC manufacturer. Our buisiness has been affected by the economy but not to the extent we are in fear of closing. We are part of Ingersoll Rand and they will be able to handle any loss we have. With Ike damaging a lot of AC units in Houston I am sure business will pickup. I am in R&D and have been working over 50 hr a week since April. Texas as a whole has a great economy Houston is one of the fastest growing city in the US. With the oil companies expanding I can see a whole lot of jobs being created. I guess it just depends on what area of the country your living. I am just thankful that I have a job at this point.

Well, so far so good for me. The economy hasn't affected me too much yet. BUT, the heating season isn't here yet. That will change things a lot. I wish had put a little more money aside for heating costs. I have a unique job that also is in the agriculture industry. I artificially inseminate cows (I know, a messy job). The farmers are doing fairly well (not great), so we do well too. I'm not looking forward to the next few months though. The idea of spending $600+ a month for heating oil costs worries me a bit. We have a pellet stove for extra heat, and I plan on running it as much as possible this winter.

I read most of these threads, but don't comment on them. I have seen many of them get very heated over politics. I have read this one through, and agree with some of the comments on here. The economical problems didn't just pop up. They were a long time coming. I feel many politicians knew about them, but ignored them hoping they would go away (or at least wouldn't erupt while they were in office). But they didn't. Now we have a huge mess. There will no quick fix. I thing we are going to see hard time for some time to come now that the huge bubble in the economy has popped. It's time we start working on helping ourselves here at home, instead of trying to supporting the rest of the world. Just my opinion.

Along similar lines, what's up with this program to have Postal carriers stock drugs at their homes to combat an anthrax attack?
Supposedly so they can hand it out to households in case of a biological attack?
What do they know that they aren't telling us?

I haven't heard a thing about anthrax since just after 9/11, and then this was reported on the news yesterday?

This seems to fit right in with what you are saying.

Well, the suspect of the 2001 anthrax attacks from the Ft. Detrick labs has conveniently died in an apparent suicide. The FBI won't release any details. The attacks had originally been blamed on middle east terrorists, but turns out that the anthrax used came from US military labs. Amazing that these anthrax attacks happened during the 9/11 time frame.

I don't think the rich give a rats a$$ about our (i.e. the country's as a whole) economy. That's why things are the way they are. They care about THEIR economy.

Saw a COUNTRY FIRST bumper sticker on a new Lexus SUV this AM.
How can someone actually put that sticker on without seeing how hypocritical they are???

My bad ! Thanx Mike for posting your reply. How come any post about a scam is considered a " political post " only wanted to show how this WILL affect all of us!! So far the posts show we are all going to be hurt by these lying self interest people. And will affect others !! somebody is getting richer by the minute !! Yes I said by the minute !! the down turn hedgers are !! These are not true americans, Sleeping in a garage does not make you a car, Neither being born in america make you an american ! courage and doing the right things for YOUR country does !! This is the generation of misfits who burnt draft cards, caused untold sorrow to those who fought for their country in previous wars. yet claim they are patriots. what hypocracy ???? IMHO Moz

I kinda have an idea to help with the housing situation, but I'm not sure what things I've missed that wouldn't allow it to work.

If the government is lending our money at 2.5% to these mortgage companies and banks. How about turning the bad assets (foreclosed homes) into purchasable properties by penalizing the banks that made these bad deals. I got to thinking, if the banks only made no more than 1% interest of profit on these properties, where financing a home that's been foreclosed wouldn't have more than a 3.5-4% interest rate for up to 40 years as a fixed mortgage. This way, the property will sell as it will attract buyers due to the low cost and low financing, allow the banks to at least cut-even where they can carry the house, and it won't affect the government's way of doing business where we would suffer through tax payers bail-out's. The main stipulation on doing this is people must have suitable credit/income, and they must retain at least $50,000 of equity in the property before selling, or flipping the house.

The way banks handle these foreclosed properties is crazy. They often turn them into homes that no one wants to buy.

    A. They have no clue as to how to market them, and are often not even in the same state as the property.

    B. Realtors will tell you the banks are very hard to work with and slow at responding to offers.

    C. Winter is coming, and many of these homes that are sitting empty won't be winterized, resulting in pipes bursting and walls cracking. The water runs for days, if not weeks because no one from the bank tends to them.
They are lucky if copper thieves remove the pipes before hand.

We were looking at homes last winter and saw time after time instances were the banks let a nice home deteriorate to the point it wasn't worth squat!

Some we looked at were only 2 years old, and might as well be bulldozed and a new house built in it's place.

The banks would be money ahead to work with people to try and avoid foreclosure in the 1st place. They won't be able to help everyone, but if a borrower has shown a good payment history they should help in either
re-writing or modifying the loan in some manner.

    Just my .02.

    Oy!
