RL called me yesterday and asked if I'd be interested in remaking / marketing the plate frames that was sold by the club back in the day. These have been unavailable for many years and he somehow managed to hook me up with a Mfg that can make me a run at a fair price. Any of you might be interested in these? Not sure if this is the correct image. Pulled it from Google
That frame is for BCA, Buick Club of America. No relation to GSCA. Just want you to not used what is in the image and maybe get in trouble with BCA...
Jim why would that be illegal. I don't think it would cover the NC sticker on the new plates and we can already use the classic plates on our classic cars. Seems odd we could not run these
I worked in the Legislature to get our old tag law enacted. That has nothing to do with this issue. In N.C. and other states a tag frame cannot obscure any part or portion of the plate. Here is a newspaper article from back then: https://www.observernewsonline.com/content/law-bans-most-license-plate-frames The frame shown above would not pass here. You might get stopped for this issue and the stop leads to another charge like a DWI.
Im thinking 5.00-6.00 + whatever shipping would be. He mentioned that there would be cut outs for the registration stickers.
That does not matter. It would not save you from the offense here and elsewhere. You appear to be confusing a renewal sticker with the registration, meaning "metal," plate. Most all of these frames cover lettering on a plate's perimeter, including the State name, which is an offense. N.C.G.S 20-63 (g) Alteration, Disguise, or Concealment of Numbers. – Any operator of a motor vehicle who shall willfully mutilate, bend, twist, cover or cause to be covered or partially covered by any bumper, light, spare tire, tire rack, strap, or other device, or who shall paint, enamel, emboss, stamp, print, perforate, or alter or add to or cut off any part or portion of a registration plate or the figures or letters thereon, or who shall place or deposit or cause to be placed or deposited any oil, grease, or other substance upon such registration plates for the purpose of making dust adhere thereto, or who shall deface, disfigure, change, or attempt to change any letter or figure thereon, or who shall display a number plate in other than a horizontal upright position, shall be guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor. Any operator of a motor vehicle who shall willfully cover or cause to be covered any part or portion of a registration plate or the figures or letters thereon by any device designed or intended to prevent or interfere with the taking of a clear photograph of a registration plate by a traffic control or toll collection system using cameras commits an infraction and shall be penalized under G.S. 14-3.1. Any operator of a motor vehicle who shall otherwise intentionally cover any number or registration renewal sticker on a registration plate with any material that makes the number or registration renewal sticker illegible commits an infraction and shall be penalized under G.S. 14-3.1. Any operator of a motor vehicle who covers any registration plate with any frame or transparent, clear, or color-tinted cover that makes a number or letter included in the vehicle's registration, the State name on the plate, or a number or month on the registration renewal sticker on the plate illegible commits an infraction and shall be penalized under G.S. 14-3.1.
Jim, almost 99.9% of dealers use a frame like that on all their vehicles. So I see no harm in these GSCA frames.
Those frames are subject to, and not exempt from, the same statute. Many people are not current on the the status law regarding the use of these frames. But, lack of familiarity or seeing no harm is not a legal defense. In general, these types of provisions are shared among the states through the national conference of state legislatures.
I have seen old style plate frames made slightly larger so the state plate fits inside the frame. This is legal in all states from what I understand as the plate is not obscured.
Geesh guys. I didnt want to start a conflict here. Im sure theres a many things a cop could pull you over for if they wanted to. the frame around a plate seems pretty minor when looking at the big picture. Around here they'd just ask you to remove it if they thought it was a problem.
Some states require two plates, front and rear while other states only require one. Briz, I’m sure that if you make these there will be plenty of people who would be interested in buying them. Maybe to use on the front of a vehicle in a state that doesn’t require the use of a front tag.
Briz-- I do not care whether someone wants to buy or use one. I do care about alerting the Board members to unforeseen legal consequences of car related activities.
