If the frame obscures any part of the plate you can be pulled over. It opens the door for probable cause (what else are you doing that’s illegal?) and gives the authorities a reason and the ability to legally search the vehicle. My son was pulled over as a teenager and this was what the cop told him. Supposedly, it was enacted to make it easier to search vehicles suspected of transporting drugs but the result was that it can apply to anybody.
If it would please the powers that be I can inc a disclaimer in the official for sale thread. Dont wanna make waves. just trying to help a brother out.
Jim's alert is intended to be informative. What you/we choose to do..or not do.... concerning the use of toppers is in your/our discretion.
Hey Briz, get em made, I'm in for 2. If a LEO wants to stop me they'll find a way, that plate surround is the least of my worries. Considering I've been stopped in the green car for "hugging the yellow line" (not crossing, his exact words were "hugging") and a "noisy exhaust" (which was at the time a complete 2.5" flowmaster system from manifolds to bumper), Im not worried about it. I don't know the details regarding a law against these in ohio, but I know they're everywhere and I've never heard of a stop for such. So really, I don't care, I'm in. YMMV.
Shawn, they are illegal here in Ohio but it's all up to the officer behind you. We have a 06 Denali and never put the front plate bracket or plate on. It's been going on thirteen years and have never been stopped for it(knock on wood). Tom
Thanks for the info. Hopefully Ohio is easing up on the front plate thing. Cars tagged with historical plates in Ohio are no longer required to have a front plate, maybe they'll do away with them altogether. When you get a historical tag now, they only give you one plate. When they mailed me the tag for the white car I called the BMV to tell them they messed up and only sent me one. Haha
Wooley would save you from being convicted under this type of statute. Here, we are primarily talking about whether a state can prohibit you from obscuring part of the name of the State that issued the tag. Clearly a state can do that.
I did get a license plate frame ticket dismissed by citing wooley once. The frame covered both New York and the state motto.
Briz, I would definitely be in for a pair for the wagon. FWIW, here in WY we are a 2 plate state. I never ran a front plate on my 13 Focus ST and now haven't ran one on my MKZ. never had any law problems. I guess if the cop is an ahole they might pull you over. Tim
Sign me up for 3 please. I still have an original I got at the Nats in the 90's but it's broken up a bit. They hassle you in mass too but pretty much leave classic cars alone. Btw got Gus today and they look fantastic! Thanks for doing them!
OK guys. Got the shipment done. Will be @ BG. I've made arrangements with Cliff and Shelia Love to have these and the Gus stickers at their swap meet trailer. I think 5.00 is a good price picked up. I'll figure shipping when I get home on the 29th.
I have never seen that here. But, in general, law enforcement officers are exempt from many laws such as speed limits, red lights, passing in a no passing zone and so forth. These laws were passed due to the proliferation of advertising frames and anti-read covers being used to impede the ability of law enforcement officers from obtaining essential identification information from license plates.
On the topic of legality, I took this picture at THE OHIO BMV TODAY. Turns out they have quite the selection of illegal contriban!!
Shawn! It's rampant!! Our BMV has the same exact display!!! I bet they are forwarding you plate number to the OHP so they can trace you down and write a ticket. Yep, that's it. I'm sure of it.....
