    Grudge match over, Buick wins!!

Just thought I would post this for my soon to come race, I have a friend with a 1970 GTO 400 w/ 370 hp that wants to race, he stops in every weekend to see if I have my engine broke in yet. His car has headers, ram air cam, tremec 5-spd and 3.73 gears. This guy loves to trash buicks and talk the talk so I can't wait to shut him up. Another week of tweaking and break in and I'll see if we can run them, hope to post some pics of me showing him tail lights!! P.S. my previous car, 1966 nova ss ate him a new behind so he has a grudge. Steve

I'm not a bad loser, and with Jim Burecks advise on the engine build all I need is traction and a heavy foot, I'm tired of my friend telling me my buick is for getting groceries so it should be fun who ever wins. I will keep you posted!! :TU:

And he thinks he'll fare better against a GSX? My God, is he clueless to everything outside of Pontiac?

His answer to more power is reach under the hood and advance the timing, I've known him for years and he has blown up every pontiac he has owned except this one, needless to say I built the motor for him in this one. I know I'm jumping the gun by posting this thread but he has me so hyped about the race I red lighted already!! :spank:

Re: Grudge match over, Buick wins!!

Results are in!! My friend Jerry with his GTO came by late this afternoon running his mouth again about how his pontiac would put a whippin on my little old lady car. I tried to put it off another week because I had a slight oil leak at my booster plate on the oil pump, he started calling me chicken and said I was just making excuses. I also needed to re adjust the rockers because a few sounded a little loose, just like a chebby would. Anyway I wanted to have someone get pictures so I could post them here but nobody was able to join us. So I decided what the heck, lets rock!!
We went to an industrial park close by where they have a nice long road people test at. We both have BF goodrich TA radials which don't have a chance of hooking up but we went at it anyway. First run I smoked the tires hard and had to play catch up but I went by him just as my car grabbed a hard second gear bark, at the end I had him by almost two car lengths. We ran two more times and I was able to launch the car much better, he says I beat him by over three car lengths both times. I really had to baby it in order to keep from blowing the tires off but I am so pleased with the Coan converter, it is awsome!! We plan on going to the local drag strip to get actual times but I am very pleased with how this brute pulls, I will have to thank Jim at PAE for the great engine combo he suggested and supplied. All smiles here guys, my friend was blown away at how easily I walked away from him and I rubbed it in big time.

Nice work...thank you. So, after you get it all dialed in, how many lengths will your pal ask for? and how many will he really need?:TU:

Re: Grudge match over, Buick wins!!

I couldn't even use the secondaries in first gear so if I get a set af drag radials this thing feels like it might lift the wheels. I'm so impressed at the ride quality as well as the monster power available at my right foot. Wish everyone could see my grin that goes ear to ear. This was the first time I pushed it hard and the temp never got over 195 degrees, oil pressure never got lower than 25 lbs. at idle and 70 was the highest I noticed.
Also would like to compliment the shorty TA headers and 3" exhaust, very quiet in the car and a great deep tone out the back. What a challenge it has been working through the oiling problem and waiting for the edelbrock heads but I'm glad to see the results. Thanks to all that have helped and to this website with all it's great people!!

Do you have some more victims in mind down there, perhaps spank a few Chevys or Mopars.
    Keep it up.

    Nice work, again.

When it is right...it is right and that is when your right foot will just keep smashing down on the gas and at some point, the adrenaline that has your face stuck in permagrin, your white knuckled hands on the wheel and shifter, your brain will kick in and overide the situation allowing you to let off the gas. When the build can take the will...:dollar: well spent.

    Good Stuff......

Another fun test on the car is after you know you have it tuned and set up, let your [trusted] pal take the wheel and run it. He will likely squeeze a few more MPH and tenths out of it since it is not his ride, ......of course, you get to run his car.:beer

    Keep us posted.

    Steve,

Looks like you have an awesome combo - great race.

I too have a Pontiac buddy who likes to talk smack, although he really is a nice guy. He has a 70 Ram Air IV that when completed is going to smoke my GS. I gave him a ride recently, and as I was slamming through the gears and mid-range, I could see him out of the corner of my eye reaching for something to hang on to. Make a long story short no more trash talk. He was trying to set up a race between my GS and 68 big block Camaro. Once the Chevy guy found out my 67 was turning mid-11s and 120 mph he wanted no part.

Anyway, it's still fun proving to others, our Buicks are hard core warriors and shut them down for a short while.

Just thought you might like to hear what happened after our local cruise night. My friend Jerry with his 70 GTO was messing with me on the way home at every stop light, I played along a couple times and stayed along side him hitting the throttle a few times to show there was much more power to be had under my foot. We were cruising at about 50 mph side by side when I heard him drop it down to third and try me at a roll on, I left it in high and rolled into it pretty good, my car surged ahead of his like he was tied to a tree. It impressed me beyond belief!! The next light we were side by side and I wanted to really launch hard and show him his car didn't belong in the same class as mine. I rolled out about 60 feet and started getting into the secondaries when it just started ripping the tires loose, before I knew it there was a little clunk and the locker I have broke and went into only one wheel. I was done needless to say. I tried it again but it smoked the tire at 60 mph. When we reached my house he jumped out saying that I created a monster, he never saw tire smoke at 60 mph before. Now he has bought a 70 boniville station wagon for 800 bucks so I can build the 455 thats in it and give him a chance to run with me. What do you think? Does a 455 GTO have a chance against a 455 GSX, to be continued!!

He is tight with the wallet so we will see how far he wants to go with it. I have sold him on the edelbrock heads so we should be able to get 500 ponies out of it. Time will tell I guess but it will be fun to match race the two cars since we live 12 miles from the strip.
