First time I got to climb around on one I was about 9-10 y.o. Seeing one in operation has been on my bucket list since 1964! So now that I have a captive audience, this is a cam-pic from '64 and the residue from 2 quarters today after being squished with 1,000,000 pound--actually 2 steering and 5 drivers worth of wheel. More coming tomorrow... the suspense is killing me LOL... ws

Train fans can experience that feeling closer to home later this week. The Big Boy No. 4014 is scheduled to depart Friday morning from Butler, Wisconsin, and arrive about 2:30 p.m. in West Chicago. The locomotive will pass through Wadsworth, Northbrook, Des Plaines, Elmhurst and Wheaton on its way to the Larry S. Provo Training Center, 335 Spencer St., where it will be on display through Monday.

The steam engine is expected to depart at 8 a.m. Tuesday, running through Geneva, Elburn, DeKalb and Rochelle on its route to Iowa, Union Pacific spokeswoman Kristen South said.

Its too bad you flatlanders in Minn. couldnt make it. Heres the schedule, now past, but maybe the pics here will help make up for it!

So you can be the first in que this morning Mark! Heres a few vids of the 4014 inbound, the engine gang lubing all the Timkens (every 200 or so miles) and the old gal rolling out. I'd have liked to done some speed time, but I was solo and traffic in the town of 315 had swelled to about 5000. On the way out for me, there were about 3-4 crashes involving fire trucks and meat wagons. Star struck crack phone people. But it was still another drop in the bucket list for me.
4014 is gonna be at the Butler Yard in Mwk, but theres no public access... what a bummer. A few days in West Chicago will have THRONGS of people touring the museum car in the consist; its got the UP logo on the side just before the observation car...

I think John Codman was doing a fly over from Oshkosh EAA about 50 miles N.E. from Friesland LOL... ws

That's about as serious steam power as you can get (on land). The only locomotive that I would more like to see in action is a New York Central Niagara, and there are none left.

Can you imagine being around it during it's heyday?
Moving all those tons of material with ease!

Even the Amish love trains, pretty cool!

I have watched about 1/3 of Bill's video - I will watch the rest later. In the second part of the clip, the producer of the video confuses tractive effort with Horsepower. No locomotive has ever been built with more then about 1/10 of the 170,000 horsepower claimed for the duplex.
Update: I have finished watching the video. Thanks for the posting, Bill.
