http://www.eelco-usa.com/ sells them for 400 bucks and i know some ppl dont like them but i bought a oil pan from them and they were excellent to deal with so lets see adapter 400 bucks used 4l80 500 bucks controller 500 more your out 1400 bucks. similar for built a 2004r or 700r4. gv unit is 2500-3000 bucks
I might be wrong, but I don't think a garden variety 4L80E is up to racing or heavy street abuse behind a healthy 455. To have one built for that purpose will cost more than the used 500.00 unit. To have a 2004R built for our cars is more like 2000.00 (if you want it to live), and then you need a converter. It is definitely worth looking into. When I was considering the GV, the 4L80E wasn't a trans that I had heard of people using behind early musclecar engines. You needed a separate computer to run them.
4l80 is a hd truck transmission(basically turbo 400 with od) stock there good for 500 hp or more. shift kit and servos your talking 700 hp. built they hold well over a 1k. and the factory convertor will last too. and if you find a diesel 4l80e they have a controller just like an aftermarket controller since the detriot 6.5s were mechanically controlled. your talking diesel trannies they put down more tq in oem mode than most built 455s as for 2004r im not sure what they cost to build not really fooled with them much. however a 700r4 you can buy for 100-200 bucks and put 800 bucks worth of parts in it and it will hold 600 hp and no need for a controller.
if you can build your own http://www.transmissioncenter.net/4l80e.htm the combo kit for the 4l80 is 1500 bucks and that includes a controller
