Found the Buildsheet in our Stage 1 that was built in Fremont, CA !!!!!

    BUQUICK I'm your huckleberry.

We bought our '72 Stage 1 in July of 1989. It was complete and appeared to never have been apart. We took the carpet and rear seat out in 1990 looking for a buildsheet but didn't find one, figured we'd find it someday when we restored the car. Well after reading some of the posts from you guys about different places you have found your buildsheets I figured there was still a good chance it was in the car somewhere.

Yesterday I actually went out to look at the car (no real reason) and opened the trunk for the first time in many years. I looked under the package shelf to look at the old funky speaker that were added many years ago by the original owner and spotted the buildsheet!!!!!!!! Someone recently posted on this board that the sheets are sometimes under the package tray, well they were right! It is on top of the package shelf on the passenger side. Unfortunately we probably won't remove it until we disassemble the car for restoration. It's tempting to take the back seat and package shelf out immediately to get it but the inside of the car is full of parts and I think it will be fine for another year.

It you have a Fremont built Buick, you might want to take a look at your car to see if your build sheet is in the same location.

    closer look

The sheet looks like it will be pretty easy to read. It shouldn't reveal any real surprises since we already have the documentation from the Sloan Museum. The only thing we want to see is if there is any radio information on it. The sloan info indicates that it was radio delete (radio option box was blank), and the front speaker opening is blocked by a piece of black cardboard and the rear package shelf is the cardboard type (not mesh) to which someone added 2 speakers.

    Cars in Barns?

Poor thing has been sitting here for many years waiting for it's turn at a restoration. Well when one of the current projects ('69 GTO) is finished, we will finally begin the restoration after having owned the car for 15 years.

Under hood, not pretty to most but it's complete and unmodified. Gotta love Buick owners, they didn't have to modify their cars like Chevy owners to get the performance they wanted!

    Gary,
Well now that you teased me, by showing just a piece, I would really like a copy of the whole thing. I only have 1 72 Stage 1 buildsheet from fremont. This would give me something to cross reference.

Wow Gary, that is pretty cool! That is a weird spot for a build sheet to be in. You definately have a rare car,Gary!

I wonder how many Stage 1 cars were built in Fremont?

Would be interesting to find out.

    Gary,
    How's it going?
That's great! I found my second build sheet for my Fremont GS in that location. Would you put me on the list to get a copy of yours? It'd be real interesting for me; especially to see how far apart ours were built and to see what the exact differences are, besides the "Stage" difference.
    Take care....

    Carl,
Yes, next year we will plan ahead so you can stop by and visit. We can give you a nickel tour of a bunch of project cars and junkers.

Yes the '72 is pretty unusual, according to the GM daily car reports:
1 of 118 Stage 1s built in Fremont
1 of 32 built with exhaust emission system (req in Cali only)
1 of 4 Stage 1s built in Fremont with the HD Air Cleaner option (not a big deal but still interesting that so few were built)

    John,
Yes when we get the buildsheet out I will make sure you also get a copy if you want it. So if I understand you correctly, you found 1 sheet under the P-shelf and another on top of the gas tank? Wow so there is a chance we might find another.

When I noticed the buildsheet in our car we initially thought that it was really interesting but figured we'd wait until we started the restoration to get the sheet out (probably at least 1 1/2 years from now) but after only a week we have decided we can't wait that long. So we will probably pull the car out of the storage building and remove the buildsheet in the next month or 2. Might drop the gas tank too.

Welp, it looks like my GS is also one of the 118/32 variety.

    Gary,
The buildsheet on top of the gas tank will be the same type as the one you have pictured. If you look under the passenger front seat, you may find a small sheet. This info was used to build the shell/interior.

Jim, what's really weird is that there were 32 Stage 1s built with the California emissions but they weren't all built in Fremont. Of the 32 total- 25 were built in Fremont (makes sense) but the remaining 7 cars were built in Flint, (not really sure why though:Do No:, export cars? or something else special?) So I guess technically you could say your car is 1 of 25 built in Fremont with the california emissions option.

Anyone know what the California Emissions actually meant? All '72 Stage 1s had a smog pump, so what did the California emissions cars get that was different?

So there were only 32 '72 Stage 1s built that were sold in CA. No wonder most people don't remember seeing these things on the street! Jim if it wasn't for your famous '72 ripping up every drag stripe around, most people wouldn't have even known the '72 Stage 1 existed.

    Under the passenger seat?

    Duane,
The sheet under the passenger seat, is it a small handwritten sheet or what?? I guess now we might take out the passenger seat too!

    Gary,
You don't have to take the seat out, Get a flashlight and look at the seat springs. If it is there, it will be tucked between them and the burlap covering.

    Gary,
Thanks. According to the '72 Service Manual, here's the lowdown on '72 Buick emission controls:
    o All have TCS.
o All manual transmissions have EGR.
o All Calif. cars have EGR.
o All have AIR (smog pump) EXCEPT non-California 350 automatics.
o Calif. cars got special carburetors and carb. ID numbers.
    Take care,
    John

Don't Calif. cars also have Evaporative Emission Controls (carbon canister)?
