Was over my parents today rummaging through some paperwork in the garage. I was trying to find the build sheet, which I haven't so far, but came across the protect-o-plate. Cool! The image is attached. The card it's attached to states a delivery date of 2-26-71. What does the number LKB032 mean? What about WYA127B and 1248 next to it? And TO146??

I also have the new car warranty booklet and a Ct temporary twenty day transfer for the registration. The car transferred from is a '69 Pontiac with the VIN 242679B177033. Anybody know what kind of car that is??

I also found th original AN radio (hey, better than the hole that's now there in the dash). I also found my original front spoiler, complete with the cracked lip from hitting a curb long ago.

All in all a good day! Now if I can just find the build sheet and the window sticker, both of which are believed to be at my parents.

    That is COOL!

LKB032 is the rear end code and 032 is the day of the rear assembly.....and the 2 way off to the right is Feb.

TO is the engine code (which appears to be stamped wrong because I don't think any GS's came with 350-2)

WYA is the trans, and I assume for a 4 speed. The numbers behind the the engine & tran codes refer to shifts at GM during the assembly's.

The 1248 refer to factory installed options:
    1 is pwr brakes
    2 A/C
    3 Dual exhaust
    4 radio sonomatic
    5 am fm stereo
    6 radio am fm
    7 Pwr win
    8 Pwr ster
    9 climate cont
    0 tape player

    Thanks Dan!

Interesting. I think my rear actually is stamped LWB and isn't TO the engine code for a 350 in a Sport Wagon? Also, the car had duals when it was six months old when my dad bought it. I'm assuming that it was there from the factory. Wonder why the "3" wasn't stamped as a factory option?

    :Do No:

Probably because dual exhaust was standard on GSs.

    Cool find Ken!

Yours is one of several P-O-Ps I've seen that were stamped incorrectly, probably done after a weekend of heavy partying :gt:

    LOL, Marco.

My car was built in February, so maybe the day after Valentine's Day? Too much wine, candy and... :eek2:

They traded in a GTO convertible! Paperwork stuff is cool to find. My dad's 69 wildcat has every scrap of paper including the paper for around the sunvisor showing you how to use the new steering column mounted ignition switch.

Thanks for sharing your paperwork find!

    Yeah, a convertible!

I joined a Pontiac forum and posted the info, hoping someone still owns that car. It would be cool to tell them who the original owner is, if they don't already know.

All that paper is great to have. Somewhere I have the owners manual and some other sort of tag with some instruction on it. I'll find that stuff soone enough too. It's amazing how scattered things can get in over 30 years!

    3?

No 3 because it didn't come from the factory with dual exhaust. The #'s represent the options installed on the car from the factory, if it isn't stamped there, it didn't get it (provided they didn't stamp the plate wrong).:TU:

LKB, I assume the rear gear was something other than the standard 342. I'm in Coventry, CT this week, and can't look up that info.

I hear you Dan, but something is wrong here. The LKB code is a 2.56 peg legger that wasn't even offered on a GS, as far as I can tell. And the TO is a 2 BBL engine.

Something doesn't make sense here. I'm quite certain I replaced the original exhaust in '77 and it was duals. Again, the only way it wouldn't have been was if someone replaced it in the first six months. But why would someone do this? And has anyone heard of a GSX with a 455 coming through with single exhaust?

The codes you listed are shown for the rear axle. Are they the same designations on the protect-o-plate? Something weird for sure. I even checked the VIN again to make sure I didn't get the wrong plate ala' some of the build sheet finds. It's correct.

I gotta think the plate is stamped wrong per Marco's comments.

Dual exhaust was standard on all GS models. I've never seen a P-O-P for a GS that listed a '3'.

    Yessir, Marco's right...

Dual exhaust was standard on all 71 GS's. :Smarty:

Hey Ken, your car came with a 455, didn't it? Do you have the vin on the front of the block?:Do No:

One more question, you have a black v top too, right? That is unique.:TU:

    Hey Dan-

Yes the car did come with a 455. I need to degrease the front of the block and find the number. It's probably numbers match. But then again, it was owned by a 21 year old girl for its first six months and it is a 4-speed, so anything is possible. :Brow:

Yep, it is a vinyl top car. From what I gather there's maybe 3 or 4 GSX cars out there with vinyl tops identified so far.

    Thanks for your help.

OK Dan, you got me real curious!

I went under the car in my jammies  and looked for the VIN. I did a search first and came up with a pic Reynold Hernandez posted here for reference.

Below is a pic of the pad on my car where I believe the number should be. Only I don't see any number??? :Do No: In the pic, the pad I'm looking at is about center bounded by the timing cover, oil filter, and the wiring harness. Is this the right place for a '71?? If so, thoughts???

Didn't mean to get ya dirty....

The 71's I've seen were all marked on the drivers side of the FRONT of the block, just below the head surface and parallel to that surface. If you email me, I can send you a pict. I will try to post it here, but I bet it is too big....

Hi Dan, where in CT. are you? I live in South Windsor. I'd love to see that GSX of yours. I have a 70 skylark done as a GSX. The car is pretty accurate to right down to the NOS dask emblem and the 24 hour clock. I've tried to attach a pic..
