You can use a Pertronix in your original dist or go with a billet MSD system. Or amybe you want to go with a 75 GM HEI I have bought these from Auto Zone and Advance in ready to drop in condition.

If you don't get a specific answer.try the search section in the sparky or bench sections. There's many ways to go about replacing the points with an electronic version(HEI,Pertronics,Mallory,MSD,Lectric,etc.).This is a well discussed topic here.Good luck.

I admire the wish to make the switch, but please spend an hour of your time searching and reading this forum so that you can benefit from lots of folks who have been there, and done that with success.

I'm sure someone will offer some advice, but if you're really willing to do it right, you'll spend some time with the research, as there's a ton of info at your disposal already.

The first link is the one you need. It's a Pertronix. Lots of guys use them with great success. If all you are worried about is getting rid of the points, it will serve the purpose.

I've used a Pertronix point replacement for more than a decade and it's proven reliable in all conditions and in all kinds of weather.

What might be interesting is to gather a list of options with strengths and weaknesses. I know I'm missing a lot of options but here's a start.

    1) Stock (it's always an option). Points work when maintained, they are easy to replace on the roadside and it's probably the cheapest option.

    2) Points replacements. A little more expensive but no need for replacement or adjustment each tuneup.
    Pertronix
    Mallory
    Crane XR-i

    3) Distributor replacements. An option if your distributor housing is worn and you don't want to rebuild it. Some offer more adjustments and multi-spark capability.
    HEI retrofitted to earlier engines
    Daves small body HEI
    MSD
    Pertronix
    Mallory
    Stinger
    Crane

    4) Seperate ignition boxes most expensive, multiple sparks, more adjustment options.
    MSD
    Mallory

Have I missed any of the major players?

Crane is out of business, which sucks because I really liked their XR-i points conversion. It had a built in rev limiter, too.

He could also leave the points in to trigger an MSD 6a or 6al box. In that application the points will last most of a lifetime; they don't burn out; very simple installation with no need to pull and potentially adjust out the play in the distributor, as is likely when going to Pertronix.

I think the best looking one is sold by Lectric Limited. M + H sells it as well. It uses only one wire. Your stock wire. All the others use radio shack connectors and there are two. They stand right out in a stock engine. About $160. I Know Jim L. swears bt them.

Two, simple, no box choices. (All inside the distributor)

    * New Pertronix 3 has rev limiter.
Provides multi spark for better idle. Uses straight 12 volt ignition wire (no resister wire) and needs matching 12 volt coil. No need for the original wire from starter to feed 12 volts during start up.

    * XR-1 Crane has rev limiter.
Uses stock resistor wire (or add on ballast resister) and stock reduced voltage type coil. Must also use the original 12 volt wire from starter to boost ignition to 12 volts during start up.

    I use a Pertronix Ignitor I.
I do have an HEI distributor with an Accel cap and rotor I will sell you. I also have an extra module I would throw in for free...
50.00 and I will pay for shipping in the 48 states...

    Get the one wire from:

    www.lectriclimited.com

It uses the stock set up and does not require modification of the resistor wire.

Gary, you missed the third and best under cap option both Jim and I mentioned. No goofy looking Radio Shack wires just stock one wire.
