    Silverbuick,
I agree with your views on the EFI, the more features the better. Interesting, Ely Nevada - We are neighbors, I live in Elko.

This was kind of my point. A $50 Holley from the swapmeet with a paint by numbers internet instructions on rebuilding it in less than an hour will get most of them to the next car show or where they want to go without worrying about having it run at the ideal tune and still have perfect, or very near perfect drivability. No EFI system, rather TBI and auto-tune or not, will come close to less than $100 to get an engine running reasonably. If you aren't willing to mess with jets at least once or twice, I'm not sure how you'd get through plumbing in a high pressure fuel pump and associated work that goes with even the simple bolt on EFI kits, which take far longer and require much more work and planning than bolting on a holley and using an OE pump or electric carb pump. You can do the same with a Q-jet, but there is more internet help for Holley's.

During Drag Week, in a two day period, I saw atmospheric pressures from 68kPa to 100kPa, and a carburetor certainly wouldn't be happy covering that range, but the engine wouldn't outright quit on me unless it was tuned lean at high elevation. If it were tuned normally or a tad lean at 100-101kPa, it'd run up over that mountain (I know because I've taken my Centurion over it on the sea level tuned Q-jet! Running from Los Angeles to Myrtle Beach and back!), just not as efficiently.

Not trying to argue with you just a friendly discussion, unless that $50 carb looks good not to many show car guys are going to go that route, at least not the ones out around here anyway. Once a Holley carb is corroded there's no making it look new again without having re-plated just like the Q-jets. I wasn't talking about someone trying to get their rust bucket running with a cheap swap meet carb, sure there will still be those guys, but that's not who I was talking about. And FYI, I heard that FiTech system is sold out right now and would be on back order if someone tried to buy one so it looks like it is a popular mod for the price.

There are a whole lot of bolt on guys than there are the guys that can tune a carb, even with internet instructions. Installing a fuel pump is a no-brainer job compared to tuning a carb for the right A/F ratios. Plus there were a lot of the show car crowd that wanted to go with FI but didn't want to plop down $2K to do it but under $1K for a 50% discount its looking like a popular mod the way its sold out and back ordered. If another system comes out that costs even less I'm sure those would be sold out even faster, if they're any good that is. Just saying, people that own these cars most of them are aware of things like A/F ratios and how a carb isn't self adjusting. Whatever it takes to keep the LS swaps out of the old Buicks is cool with me.

That does look like a nice setup with plenty of features like spark control capable and the other system is blow thru capable with a MAP sensor among others. I haven't found a bad review for that system yet either, still looking.

It doesn't look as nice as the coil on plug setup on your 455 though that is SWEET!

I too have only heard good reviews of the FITECH TBI setup. One guy I meet up with on the Car Craft Anti-Tour semi-regularly put one on a Dodge truck and so far he says it's great.

There are a lot of variables that go into "better fuel mileage". If comparing a carb to EFI for mpg, if both are just reasonably close in tune, there are a few nuances you can do with EFI to pick up a few mpg, but driving style is the biggest factor followed up with highway versus city driving.

The thing EFI lets you do (I assume EZ EFI can do this..) is complete fuel cut when you let off the throttle or engine brake and not add an accelerator pump shot every time you push the gas pedal down. It is easier to be extra lean at idle and cruise without really screwing with acceleration and tip in response with EFI, but a good carb person can do the same.

If you can get ignition control, do it. The ignition timing a cruising speed in overdrive is way less than you want it to be at the lower rpm and lean cruise loads. I have upwards 45 of timing in it at 2,400rpm and 16.5:1 AFR's when cruising on flat ground or slight down hill. Almost impossible to do that with an HEI and still hit 32-34 total mechanical timing (as well as crank the engine at 5). Without the extra timing, you cannot run as lean as what is possible while cruising. The lean mixture simply needs more advance.

i love my MSD "atomic" EFI. I can control my timing, electric fans (independently), idle, and pretty much everything from inside my car, even while driving. and MSD's tech support is top notch.

Called Fi Tech.http://fitechefi.com/default.asp.pg-Products Got the power adder 600hp TB unit on order along with their fuel commander system ordered. Pretty neat - will get timing, nitrous control. TB is in stock, fuel commanders are in, but going through customs now. Should have it by end of month. Will do a nice write up once I get it and install.

Subscribed. I know very little about carbs. This setup looks like a good option for my regal.

Hurry up and try to fit it up. Then I'm wondering how it will work with a typical drop base air cleaner.

I am really interested in this. No one else doing the throttle body EFI wants to do blow through. FITECH says no problem up to 25 psi.

For me the fuel system has all the components already. Would need to change the fuel regulator and mod the lines a little.

Now that MSD took over Mallory we are selling MSD products. Catalog has not been updated yet, hopefully soon. We just installed a MSD Atomic on my late fathers 70 455 GS 4 speed car. This was one of his wishes he spoke of within his last month of his life. So far so good. Capable of making changes on the fly, communicates with MSD box and distributor for timing adjustments. Hand held controller is laid out in carburetor terms to make it easier for all us carb guys to understand. Fits on an SP1 with a not so extreme drop base 2.0" air cleaner. It is available through TA now that we are working with MSD as well as any other MSD products you may need. If you have questions feel welcome to call me and I will share what I have learned.

    Just curious.........
