The kit for the 64-66 engines is finished and pictured here. You will reuse the stock flexplate and all other parts are included to mount the transmission. You will need to source a dynaflow dust cover to close up the gap below the nailhead block and the bottom two hole mount to the adpater just as they did the dynaflow bellhousing. This kit is already on the way to a few of our members here and i am excited to get some feedback. I have been working on this and a few other projects for nearly a year. I will also post a thread on the installation if this kit early next week. Thanks again for all the support and patience! Marty
The 57-63 kit is the same as the 64-66 but includes a new production flexplate that i also designed do be a direct fit replacement for the 64-66 cars as well. I solved the problem of needing to use a 64-66 starter on the earlier engine by developing a spacer that moves the starter back and relocated the engagement point of the drive to the new flexplate and also reduced the size of the coupler and the adpater thickness itself. This was necessary to avoid rear main bearing failure from the added unsupported rotating weight on the back of the crank. The kit part no.s are as follows 57-63 #4245 575.00 64-66 #4246 449.00
If you are using a mini starter and you have the 64-66 flexplate (which will need to be machined for the larger register on the dynaflow crank) you can use the 64-66 kit just fine.
thats what im doing its a a 62 engine but its going in my 66 and is being backed by the 200. on the 65-66 flexplate i just need the whole in the center machined larger right.
Thanks maybe I should of done a little more reading. So with this plate I would be able to match my 1961 401 to a 1965 ST400?
You don't need Marty's adapter to mount the '65 ST400 to your '61 401. His adapter is to allow you to mount a Chevy trans to a Nailhead. The ST400 already has the Nailhead belhousing pattern. All you need is a crank bushing adapter (from Marty or Russ Martin), an original '64-'66 flexplate, and the later style starter.
Andy I thought the Dynaflow crankshafts had to be machined to remove the lip that the dynaflow flex plate used? Russ's bushing then centers up the SP 400's converter hub in the pilot area of the Dynaflow crankshaft. I have also heard of people machining the center hole of the 64 to 66 flexplate oversize to the Dynaflow diameter. That modification kind of scares me!o No: Tim
Hey Guys, I am supposed to be the FIRST in line on Marty's trans adapter. I have not received it yet, but I am excited so when I get it, I will post pictures and comments. I should be getting it any day according to him which is good since my project is dead in the water without it. Dave
I was under the impression that you needed an adaptor to match up my 61 engine to the 65 trans. Am I wrong
Both of those are viable solutions, but yes, one of them needs to done. I think Marty might sell a kit with a new flexplate where you don't need to do either of those mods.
Your '61 401 will physically bolt right up to a '65 ST400. But, you will need the crank bushing adapter, ST400 flexplate, and ST400 starter.
Sweeeeet, I also got the bushing adaptor from Russell when I bought the engine from all I need is a flex plate, starter and most importantly a trans. Anyone know where I can get a flexplate?
