Yup, the dyna is as heavy as lead and the hydra is heavier than lead. Cast iron case ect. used a lot back in the 50's, had 4 speeds, B&M Hydro built thier business on that transmission. Used a lot in the gas classes. There is a few still around. hard to tear up. Hard to tote around.

    Doc,
Stop it now! I've got flashbacks of the "Swindler" Willy's coupe of Stone, Woods and Cook (pebble, pulp and chef to their detractors!)with a blown Olds and a B&M Hydro-stick! I know it's not a Nailhead, but it's a very significant piece of automotive history!:3gears:

Tim, I cannot stop. I confess, I have stood at the sidelines and watched the 48 Anglias, 1940- 41 Willises , the Henry j's , 30's ford coupes ect. Fight it out. It is still in my blood. I desperately need a gasser fix. I am so addicted. I can still hear the noise and smell the rubber burning. And the door names, SWC, RAunchy, Snot gobbler, Frito bandito, I got the fun of racing Frito Bandito once, i was ''little eliminator'' and he was ''middle eliminator''. They gave me sevaral seconds handicap on him with my little G/S/A Buick. I was a third of the way down the strip when I heard him leave the line. He was blown /gas/ coupe. i thought I would beat him but about 1/2 length before the finish he came by me and then popped the chute. When he stopped he told me ,"I thought you were going to get me'' '' With a Buick????'' I had to laugh, his reaction was just like a lot I had encountered on the street.

    Doc,
Great story about the GSA Buick, kind of a "David" Buick versus Goliath match up! LOL! I ran a 70 Malibu in LPSA at Northstar dragways back in the late 70's, it ran a 15.99 on a 14.99 national record, but I never could find that other second! LOL! Don't forget about Ohio George, Big John Mazmanian(?) and the famous alerted pilot, "Wild" Willie Bortsch. MSRA does a super secret fun run at BIR every summer, I need to check it out in 2008! Quite a few old timer's and their cars run there all weekend. Maybe a nailhead powered altered or 41 Willys could be my next project!:3gears:

ah got my trans from greg, now comes the fun part, oreilly dosent carry a filter kit or a pan gasket, if i remember right it is just a screen for a filter, but i'm not keen on slapping it together with rtv, it would be nice to have a gasket. anyone know of a supplier?

    Jake,
Try Dacco first and see if they have it, 651-641-1824. There is a guy who advertizes Dynaflow kits and parts in the BCA Bugle:
    David Edwards

The most important piece of the DynaFlow that's often not payed much attention too is the TORQUE CONVERTER!!!!!!. This is what makes the trans. work. Do yourself a favor & get a book, & READ IT!!!!!!! The converter will make or break the final outcome & longevity. There are thrust washers that play an important role in clearances, DON'T IGNORE THEM!!!!!!!

    Jake,
Tom is right, a service manual would be a really good investment! Another alternative would be to contact Dacco and see if they have a dedicated Dynaflow overhaul manual available. They usually run about $14 to $20 and do a good job of explaining overhaul procedures.
Tom is also right about the torque converter, it supplies all of the "gear" ratios and torque multiplication on the Dynaflow. The 2 bands, the clutch and the planetary gear set allow the Dynaflow to have engine braking and reverse, period. There are a couple of special tools needed for measuring and adjusting the converter clearance and all of them are 4 digit Kent Moore numbers, which will date back to the 1940's! There are guys who still advertise that they have all the selective shims, so setting one up should still be possible. A good friend of mine is trying to talk me into overhauling one of them in my garage and documenting it with a digital camera or a video camera. I told him, "I'll wrench, YOU film!" LOL!!
    Take Care,
    Tim:beer
